Shafaq News/ Sinuni administration announced the liberation of a Yazidi girl kidnapped by ISIS nearly seven years ago. The Sinuni District Khodida Jogi director told Shafaq News Agency that the security forces freed "Rosa Amin," who was kidnapped in 2014 when she was a 12-year-old.

"The girl is currently in "the Yazidi house" in the Al-Jazira region in northeastern Syria, and she will be transferred to Sinjar to be delivered to her parents." He added. 

Sinuni is located in the Sinjar District of the Ninawa Governorate in Iraq. It belongs to the disputed territories of Northern Iraq.    It is mainly populated by Yazidis.

Butterfly   EU drops Iraq from List of High-Risk Countries for Money Laundering 11th January 2022 The European Union's Ambassador to Iraq has announced that Iraq has been removed from its list of countries deemed to carry a high risk of money laundering.

Following a meeting with Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi in Baghdad on Sunday, Ville Varjola tweeted:

"Bringing the good news today to HE Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi that Iraq has been taken off the list of countries at high risk of money laundering by the EU. Will pave the way for deepening financial cooperation and investment."

Al-Kadhimi responded:

"The decision of the EU to delist Iraq from the list of high risk countries on AML/CTF is a manifestation of our effective diplomatic efforts. We will continue working diligently to serve our national interests, and achieve Iraq's deserved status."

As of Monday evening there appears to be no official confirmation of the change on the EU's website.

Iraq was added to the EU's list of high-risk third countries in September 2016.

Following the UK's departure from the EU, it announced its own list of high risk countries in April 2021, which did not include Iraq.

In July, Prime Minister Al-Kadhimi asked the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to remove Iraq from the list.

Shafaq News Agency correspondent said that the CBI sales of foreign currency in today's auction amounted to 210,686,370. The transactions were made at a weighted average of 1460 dinars to every dollar.

Our correspondent explained that 21 banks and 266 exchange companies cashed out $59.800 million, while the remaining $150,886,370 went to boost funds abroad in the form of credit and non-cash transactions, with 26 banks meeting those demands.

Shafaq News/ The head of the National Oil Company, Minister of Oil Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail, called for expediting the exploration and seismic surveys of the marine blocks in the Arab Gulf and completing the necessary measures for offshore operations.

Ismail's statements came during a workshop on developing the marine blocks earlier today, Tuesday. The workshop was organized by the Oil Exploration Company in cooperation with the Chinese company, CNOOC.

Minister Ismail called for commencing the procedures, locating exploration spots in the offshore part of the block, and accelerating the seismic surveys for the onshore part.

The Director-General of the state-owned Oil Exploration Company, Bassim Mohamed Khudeir, said that exploration operations in the offshore and onshore parts of the block shall be conducted through seismic surveys. Afterward, exploration wells should be drilled in each part.

The representative of CNOOC, Vincent Xie, said that the agreement concluded with Iraq is a joint study agreement on the marine exploration block in its offshore and onshore parts.

"The study reviewed during the workshop encompasses two parts: the first is offshore, which will be implemented by the CNOOC, and the second is onshore, which will be implemented by the Oil Exploration Company...A joint work team from both sides to achieve the study's objectives and reach fruitful results.

In 2019, Iraq signed a preliminary agreement with CNOOC to explore the maritime blocs, but subsequent meetings were not held due to the outbreak of COVID-19. In 2021, meetings were resumed to continue the preparations for the study.

January 11, 2022 BEIRUT: Lebanon and Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Sunday aimed at strengthening ties in the economic, industrial, scientific, environmental and technological fields, according to a statement released by Lebanon's Industry Ministry.

The MoU was signed by Iraqi Minister of Industry and Minerals Manhal Aziz al-Khabbaz and Lebanese Industry Minister George Bouchikian, who is on an official visit to Iraq to discuss ways of boosting ties between the two countries.

The MoU also intends to improve business cooperation between the two countries, according to the ministry's statement.

George Bouchikian said he discussed technical and economic issues with Iraqi officials in order to facilitate exchange and set up joint investments in the industrial and production sectors that meet both countries' demands, particularly in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Iraq, according to al-Khabbaz, is looking forward to benefiting from Lebanon's pharmaceutical manufacturing expertise.

Shafaq News/ Two political sources revealed that the leader of the Sadrist Movement had created the largest parliamentary bloc that will be able to form the next Iraqi government.

A leader in the Movement, and another Sunni leader, told Shafaq News Agency, "Al-Sadr was able to form a large bloc that includes 180 deputies."

Al-Sadr needs 165 members' votes to form the next government.

The first session of Parliament is scheduled to be held next Sunday to elect the new speaker of Parliament and his two deputies.

Earlier on Friday, al-Sadr hinted at the political forces allied with him to form the next government, saying, "Any Threats will make us more resolute (Tasmeem bloc/ five seats), advanced (Takadum bloc/ 37 seats), and determined (Al-Azm bloc/ 14 seats) to reach an Iraqi democracy (Kurdistan Democratic Party/ 31 seats)."

The two sources added that smaller and independent political blocs also joined the new bloc of al-Sadr, who seeks to form a "national majority" government.

It is worth noting that according to the results of the elections, the Sadrist Movement won the highest number of seats (73.)

Compared with 2018 results, The Al-Fateh Alliance lost 31 seats, taking only 17 seats in the last elections.

Brent crude futures rose 48 cents, or 0.6 percent, to $82.47 a barrel, after a 1.5 percent jump in the previous session.

US West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 50 cents, or 0.6 percent, to $ 79.96 a barrel, after rising 2.1 percent in the previous session.

"The jump in oil prices mainly reflects market fears, with the growing turmoil in Kazakhstan and the continued deterioration of the political situation in Libya," affecting oil production, Rystad Energy analyst Louise Dixon said in an email comment.

After days of turmoil in Kazakhstan during which the government declared a state of emergency, Russia on Thursday sent paratroopers to quell the uprising. The protests began in the oil-rich western regions of Kazakhstan after fuel prices were raised at the start of the new year.

Brent and US crude are heading towards a six percent increase in the first week of the year, as prices reached their highest levels since late November, as concerns about supplies outweighed concerns about the possibility of demand being affected by the rapid spread of the mutant Omicron from the Corona virus.

Increases in supply from the OPEC+ group, which includes the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Russia and allies, have not kept pace with demand growth.

OPEC production in December rose by 70,000 barrels per day from the previous month, much less than the increase allowed under the OPEC + agreement of 253,000 barrels per day, which restored production cut in 2020 when demand collapsed under the Covid-19 closures. .

It is worth noting that the Sadrist bloc emerged as the clear winner with 73 seats in the 329-seat parliament. Takadum party, one of two main Sunni political groups and led by the speaker of the outgoing parliament Mohammed al-Halboosi, followed with 37 seats. An ISIS resurgence is just one scenario out of four.

By SARDAR SATTAR Published: JANUARY 6, 2022 19:20 On December 29, only two days before the deadline for the US-led Global Coalition to withdraw its combat forces from Iraq, prime minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi announced that the last American soldier had already left his country and the remaining foreign forces were only there to train and advise the Iraqi forces.

This might be considered the end of an era, but could also be the beginning of a new one. The withdrawal, as many believe, can lead to the resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIS), which is only one scenario in the absence of US combat forces in Iraq. The ISIS resurgence itself could mark the beginning of a new chain of crises that would not be easy to handle this time.

Early in December, when the US began the practical phase of their withdrawal, ISIS stepped up terrorist attacks in the provinces of Diyala, Salahaddin, Anbar, Kirkuk, and Nineveh. In less than 30 days, the extremist group killed at least 30 Peshmerga fighters of the Kurdistan Region, and many more Iraqi troops and paramilitary fighters.

This was soon interrupted by a debate on whether or not Iraq should ask the US to prolong the withdrawal, but it was too late because the official agreements had already been made.

If we consider the re-emergence of ISIS as the first likely scenario in the absence of coalition and US combat forces, then there are three others that could eventually become inevitable realities.

Butterfly   First of all, the possible ISIS comeback could give the Iranian backed Shia militias in Iraq a chance to justify prolonging their existence, as they were originally formed to assist the Iraqi Army in its war against the Sunni extremist group. Since the latest parliamentary elections, the powerful Shia cleric Muqtada Al-Sadr, whose Sadrist Movement has emerged victorious, has repeatedly called for the dissolution of the militia groups, so weapons would only be in the hands of the state.

Therefore, an increase in ISIS movements in Iraq could give the Shia militias the chance to convince influential leaders like Al-Sadr that their existence is still needed in Iraq.

THE SECOND scenario is giving Iran an upper hand again to shape the future of Iraq’s political landscape. Since 2005, when the majority Shia population rose to power in Iraq, Iran has been an active and, in most cases, decisive player in Iraq. The strength of the Shia militias would mean Iran’s greater hegemony in Baghdad, where a gap has been left by the US and its allies since their withdrawal.

The third one is: if these domino-like scenarios are what we should expect, a last blow comes when Baghdad fails to form a new government – at least an inclusive and successful one.

In this scenario, the Shia militias have lost the election, but they are unlikely to let political rivals take power and shape the next government so easily and through a democratic process. They see the real power as coming from military capacity and not public backing, which means they will keep their weapons and, consequently, maintain their political power.

butterfly   Considering these arguments, Iraq would most likely see a significant surge in violence once again that would help Iran to restructure its deep state in Iraq. It would also revive Iran’s regional influence, especially after facing a massive setback in the absence of Qasem Soleimani, the top Iranian general killed in a US airstrike two years ago, who was known as the man behind every political move in Baghdad.

AstraZeneca, GE Healthcare USA Holding, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Hoffmann-La Roche, and other companies are accused by plaintiffs, family members of victims of the attack in Iraq by the Mahdi group, of providing illegal support to terrorist acts in two ways. First, plaintiffs claim that defendants used local agents to deliver cash kickbacks to the terrorists who gave them business.

Second, plaintiffs argue that defendants delivered extra, off-the-books batches of valuable medical goods to Jaysh al-Mahdi to sell on the black market to fund their operation and pay terrorist fighters. According to norm, the eldest of the parliamentarians will chair the first session, and the assembly will get 30 days to elect a new president, replacing the incumbent Barham Salih.

Since the 2003 toppling of Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi presidency has traditionally been reserved for a Kurdish figure (with the brief exception of Ghazi Al Yawer in 2004-2005). Salih’s successor is up for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) to decide, who jointly command 63 seats in the new Chamber.
