Economic Last Update 01/22/22 | 9:33 PM
Asian shipping companies are offering huge bonuses to employees, amid a boom in freight rates, with China's state-owned giant Cosco Shipping Holdings Inc. disbursing bonuses of up to 60% of managers' annual salary, according to Caixin Global.

Butterfly The Sadrist bloc: We will win the presidency with “comfort” with our Kurdish and Sunni partners
2022-01-23 06:58 The Sadrist bloc - We will win the presidency with comfort with our Kurdish and Sunni partnersShafaq News/ An informed source in the Sadrist bloc confirmed, on Saturday, that strategic alliances with Sunni and Kurdish partners are able to win the three presidencies and pass them comfortably, noting that the announcement of the formation of the new government will be soon if the Kurds agree on the candidate for the presidency.
The source told Shafaq News Agency, “The Sadrist bloc and its partners possess the required number of votes needed to form the government, and the political movement for its formation is proceeding in full swing, and as soon as the Kurdish forces agree on their candidate for the presidency, we will be very close to announcing the nomination of the candidate to head the government and its formation.”
He explained that “the Federal Court will issue a logical decision commensurate with the data presented to it, and therefore its decisions will be decisive, as all of this will not affect our strategic alliances with partners who support the program of a national majority government.”
He added, “Also, the issue of forming a government is progressing in full swing, and that the Sadrist bloc, being the largest because it has the largest number of parliamentary seats, has the right to nominate or put forward a candidate for prime minister, and thus the ball remains within the Sadrist bloc’s arena regarding that.”
butterfly The source added that “there are political parties trying to play the role of mediator to revive the Shiite house again, but this will not happen unless all the political forces affiliated with the strategic framework secure the government program that it seeks to implement to bring about a legislative revolution that guarantees the activation of service and investment projects that achieve the interests of Iraqis exclusively, as well as Advancement of economic and health aspects, as previous parliamentary sessions were almost suspended for these bills.
He added that “the pivotal point of contention between the Sadrist bloc and the coordination framework lies in the mechanism for naming the prime minister, as the framework seeks to be consensual, while the Sadrist bloc insists that he be a candidate for a national majority government, not consensual.”
He pointed out that “the movement between the partners is proceeding smoothly and that once the Kurdish brothers agree on their candidate for the presidency, the process of forming the government will be completed after the Sadrist bloc’s candidate for prime minister has been proposed, and all the procedures in this have been completed and there is little change in the presidency of Parliament and its belongings, as we can say in a more precise sense that Announcing the final formation of the Iraqi government is just around the corner.”
The court had postponed the deciding session on the legitimacy of the election of the presidency of the House of Representatives, to the twenty-fifth of this month.
And the court decided to stop the work of the Presidency of the House of Representatives elected in the first session of the House of Representatives until two lawsuits regarding the legality of the session are resolved.
The decision comes after two lawsuits filed by MP Basem Khashan and his colleague Mahmoud Daoud regarding the first session and its “illegality”. shafaq.com

Butterfly US Senator: The US Economy Enriches The Rich And Exacerbates The Plight Of The Poor
International Last Update 01/22/22 | 4:29 PM Independent US Senator Bernie Sander has decried the fraudulent political and economic system in the United States that has allowed billionaires to get richer during the pandemic while others suffer financial hardship.
"The rigged economic and political system is when billionaires spend $1.2 billion in campaign contributions to buy politicians in the last elections, get richer by $2 trillion during the pandemic and don't pay," Sanders said in a tweet on his personal page on the social networking site Twitter. Taxes are less than what the nurse pays.”
In another tweet, he added, “The campaign finance system should be repealed in reference to a controversial January 21, 2010 decision by the Supreme Court that repealed a century-old campaign finance restriction, as the court ruled that corporations, unions and wealthy donors have the right to Freedom of expression and in spending unlimited money to influence the US elections.”
He continued, "A new report released by the Institute for Policy Studies Oxfam said that the richest individuals in America have seen their number increase in the past five years, with American billionaires increasing their wealth by $2 trillion during the pandemic alone."
He explained, “According to the report, there are 2,660 billionaires worldwide. As of November 30, 2021, these billionaires had a combined fortune of $13.76 trillion. The United States alone and 740 of these billionaires together own $5.1 trillion.”
The report indicated that “a wealth tax of 2% for individuals who own more than $ 5 million, 3% for those who have more than $ 50 million, and 5% for those who have more than one billion dollars will generate $ 928.39 billion annually, and this amount is sufficient to cover The largest and most prominent part of the US federal spending that suffers from difficulties and inflation.”

butterfly Here is another article on bitcoin:
What awaits Bitcoin in 2022?
- 15 Hours Ago Coinciding with the protests and turmoil that shook Kazakhstan, one of the 3 most important countries in the world in mining virtual currencies, the price of Bitcoin fell in early January to below $ 40,000.
In a report published by the Russian newspaper "Gazeta", writer Oksana Reshetova says that the price of Bitcoin witnessed a slight increase on January 11, as it was traded in the range of 41,700 dollars.
A number of experts believe that the political crisis in Kazakhstan played an important role in this decline, as the country's share of global Bitcoin mining is about 18%, but there are other factors that contributed to the decline in the price of the first digital currency in the world.
Why Did Bitcoin Prices Drop?
Artem Dave, principal analyst at AMarkets, believes that the decline in the exchange rate of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies at the end of last year is mainly due to new actions in the stock market.
Dave stresses that after the annual inflation rate in the United States rose to 6.2%, a record level not seen in the United States in more than 30 years, it has become clear that the Federal Reserve is close to tightening monetary policy by raising interest rates.
Dave continues that the returns from investing in stocks, currencies and all risky assets, including cryptocurrencies, automatically decline with the increase in interest rates, so investors during the last period avoided the risk of buying bitcoin, ether and other digital currencies.
butterfly Dave believes that the developments in the situation in Kazakhstan have also had a negative impact on the Bitcoin exchange rate.
For his part, Sergey Berikhod, a financial analyst at Finam Financial Services, says that the volume of mining in Kazakhstan has witnessed a significant development after the mass exodus of workers in this field from China, due to the pressure exerted by the Chinese authorities on digital currencies.
Berekhod adds that Kazakhstan has become the third-largest cryptocurrency mining world in the world, and as a result of the internet shutdown following the escalation of anti-government protests, the total computing power of mining equipment has decreased by 13%.
But the expert in the crypto-asset market Aaron Chomsky believes that the events in Kazakhstan have not affected the cryptocurrency market, and that the decline in the prices of these currencies is due only to the levels of supply and demand.
The value of the currency last November reached its highest level, exceeding the threshold of 68,000 dollars. With demand falling, Chomsky expects the value of Bitcoin to fall below $30,000.
Butterfly What will happen to bitcoin in 2022?
Dave believes that the rise in the price of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies during the coming period is related to the stability of the global economy and the reduction of interest rates by central banks, because such conditions will attract investors to risky assets.
“Given that this year will see a period of large-scale increases in interest rates by banks, it is unlikely that there will be any rise before the second half of 2022, when investors return strongly to cryptocurrencies. This could happen if the bitcoin traded price reached between $20,000 and $30,000.”
“The lower value of the assets will tempt many to invest in cryptocurrencies, and at a later stage push prices higher,” Dave continues.
For his part, Berekhod believes that the US stock market has put great pressure on cryptocurrencies, and on Bitcoin in particular, recently. It is believed that at worst, the exchange rate could reach $36,000.
According to Chomsky, the faster the Bitcoin price declines around $30,000, the higher the chances of it returning quickly to its previous highs, and this may happen in the second half of 2022.

butterfly The military in Iraq are listening to the guidance of the US forces, not like those in Afghanistan: Iraqi military intelligence destroys an ISIS tunnel near Erbil 2022-01-22 07:02
Shafaq News/ The Iraqi military intelligence destroyed an ISIS tunnel near the capital of the Kurdistan Region, Erbil, earlier today, Saturday.

"During the operation, the forces located a tunnel used by ISIS operatives as a hideout and weapons depot. The tunnel was detonated under controlled circumstances by the explosives squad accompanying the force," the statement said.

butterfly After al-Hasakeh prison break, Iraq ramps up security in prisons housing ISIS commanders 2022-01-22 07:08
Shafaq News/ Iraqi security authorities ramped up security measures in and near the prisons housing members and commanders of the terrorist organization ISIS, a source revealed on Saturday.
The source told Shafaq News Agency, "senior commanders directed tightening security measures in the prisons where ISIS commanders are detained."
"Tight security measures were taken in the prisons of al-Taji, al-Kefl, al-Hout. The directive was issued in the aftermath of the attack on the Geweran prison in the Syrian city of al-Hasakeh and the prison break of senior ISIS commanders detained there."
Kurdish-led forces in northeast Syria on Thursday said they thwarted a prison break at a detention center holding ISIS militants.
A spokesperson for the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said a car bomb was set off near Geweran prison in Hasakah province.
The "insurgence coincided w/a car bomb explosion near the prison conducted by ISIS sleeper cells, who infiltrated from the surrounding neighborhoods" and clashed with internal security forces, tweeted SDF spokesperson Farhad Shami, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.
"In an attempt to create chaos, the Daesh detainees burned blankets and plastic materials inside dormitories," Shami said. "The members of terrorist cells who attacked the prison from outside fled to al-Zohour neighborhood near the prison and hid in civilian homes, and our forces imposed a security cordon around the area."
According to two residents cited by Reuters, several inmates were killed in the episode. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, said "a number of prisoners managed to escape."
The prison unrest comes amid a recent rise in sleeper cell attacks, particularly in Syria's Deir ez-Zor region.
butterfly Nearly three years after IS lost its final stronghold in the Syrian town of Baghouz, the group has been exploiting the country's economic crisis to lure new recruits. Prison officials and current detainees in Hasakah told Al-Monitor that IS is offering irresistible sums of money to poor Syrians willing to join their ranks.
The SDF and its political arm, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), have long asked the United States and coalition partners for additional support in securing the detention facilities housing thousands of IS prisoners, many of whom Western governments have refused to repatriate and prosecute.
Sinam Mohamad, the SDC's top diplomat in Washington, tweeted Thursday that the prisons and the potential for detainees to escape remains a threat to northeast Syria.
"A solution should be found to keep the region stable and secure," she said. https://www.shafaq.com/en/Iraq-News/After-al-Hasakeh-prison-break-Iraq-ramps-up-security-in-prisons-housing-ISIS-commanders

An accelerated energy transition to mitigate climate risk will have tangible economic implications and may shave $75 trillion off global gross domestic product between 2022 and 2050 as countries push to meet their climate commitments.
The global economy is set to double in size in real terms, rising to $169tn by mid-century from the current $85.6tn, Wood Mackenzie said in its latest report detailing economic consequences of energy transition.
Under its base case scenario, the research company expects temperatures to reach 2.5-2.7°C above pre-industrial levels by mid-century. However, to limit this warming to 1.5°C, in line with the Paris climate pledge, the energy transition will have to accelerate.
Measures to lower temperature will boost global GDP, on aggregate, by 1.6 per cent by 2050, Wood Mackenzie estimates. At the same time, however, the actions required to successfully mitigate climate risks could slash output by 3.6 per cent. The push to cap levels at 1.5°C agreed in the Paris Climate Accord will result in net drop of about 2 per cent by 2050. butterfly A Superpower Submits A Proposal To Ban Cryptocurrencies
Economic Last Update 01/20/2022 | 5:09 PM The Russian Central Bank, the third largest cryptocurrency country in the world, has proposed a blanket ban on the use and mining of all cryptocurrencies domestically.
The Central Bank said in a report published today, Thursday, that cryptocurrencies bear the hallmarks of a pyramid scheme, and undermine the sovereignty of monetary policy, which poses a threat to the Russian financial system.
The report stated that the potential financial stability risks associated with cryptocurrencies are much higher for emerging markets, including in Russia, due to increased propensity to save in foreign currency with an insufficient level of financial literacy, quoting Bloomberg.
The bank explained that mining harms the country's green agenda, threatens Russia's energy supply and amplifies the negative effects of the proliferation of cryptocurrencies, creating incentives to circumvent attempts at regulation.
Two well-informed sources said the central bank's tough stance against cryptocurrencies is in line with that of Russia's powerful security services, which also support banning cryptocurrencies domestically to prevent them from being used to fund opposition in the country.
Russia is home to a thriving mining industry, which has become an increasingly important hub after China described cryptocurrency-related transactions as illicit financial activity and vowed to root out digital asset mining.
Russia became the world's third largest cryptocurrency mining country last year, according to Cambridge University data.
The largest crypto mines are located in the north of the country and in Siberia, where temperatures are low and there is potential for cheap energy.
Russia already bans the use of digital currencies to make payments, but lawmakers have acknowledged the presence of digital currencies in the 2020 law as their popularity grows.
butterfly Unlike in China, the ban will not apply to assets held by Russians abroad, and those with offshore bank accounts will be able to trade cryptocurrency. https://almaalomah.me/2022/01/20/577736/
butterfly Sweden Renews Support for De-Mining in Iraq ............ 21st January 2022 in Security .............. The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) welcomes the contribution of SEK 50 million (approximately USD 5.7 million) from the Government of Sweden, which will support the Government of Iraq with humanitarian, socio-economic, and reconstruction efforts while protecting vulnerable civilians from the threat posed by explosive ordnance.
Due to successive conflicts in Iraq from 1980 until 2017, as well as the most recent conflict waged by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Iraq is one of the world's most explosive ordnance-contaminated countries, with approximately 2,850 square kilometers of recorded contaminated areas.
The financial contribution from the Government of Sweden will bolster the efforts of UNMAS to support capacity development for a nationally led and implemented explosive ordnance response.
The Swedish contribution will support clearance of explosive ordnance in the liberated areas and southern Iraq and will further support explosive ordnance risk education efforts to protect civilians, with messages and means tailored to reach women and children, as well as internally displaced person (IDPs) and vulnerable communities.
The implementation of the project, which began in December 2021 and will run for 24 months, will assist UNMAS to support the national mine action authorities through technical advice and training for effective management, regulation and coordination of mine action sector. Furthermore, it will build sustainable capacity of the national operators to independently deliver mine action activities.
butterfly His Excellency Mr. Jonas Loven, Ambassador of Sweden to Iraq, said:
"Explosive ordnances continue to pose a serious threat to civilians all through Iraq. The widespread contamination is an obstacle for returns and access to basic social services that will require mine action for years to come. Sweden has had a long relationship with UNMAS Iraq and is proud to continue supporting their work including the increased focus on national capacity strengthening during this phase."
Pehr Lodhammar, Chief Mine Action Programme of UNMAS in Iraq, commented:
"With this generous contribution, Sweden has supported UNMAS activities in Iraq with more than USD 14 million since 2018. The Swedish support will greatly contribute to durable solutions by facilitating the safe return of IDPs to their places of origin, and enabling access to communities in need for humanitarian assistance."

butterfly US shifting towards diplomacy in Iraq when dealing with Iran, experts say
Washington taking softer approach when dealing with Iranian meddling in Iraq and the wider region Jan 21, 2022 ................................... US-Iraqi relations have taken a more diplomatic path under President Joe Biden’s administration in comparison to the Donald Trump era, experts have told The National.
Mr Biden was inaugurated a year ago and has shifted Washington’s policy by taking a softer approach when dealing with Iranian meddling in Iraq and the wider region.
“The Biden administration has a completely different view of Iraq and the region than the Trump administration,” said Renad Mansour, director of the Iraq initiative at London’s Chatham House.
“The Trump administration's legacy in Iraq will be centred around the very maximal policy against Iran in Iraq.”
Under Mr Trump, who served one term as US president between 2016 and 2021, Iraq was used as a “battle on the ground” for Washington’s conflict with Iran, Mr Mansour said. UNEEK Some interesting Tid Bits for today while we "wait":
UNEEK Gabby Gingras was born unable to feel pain. She has a full sense of touch. But a rare genetic condition left her completely unable to sense physical pain.
You might think this is a superpower, or an incredible gift. But her life is dreadful. The inability to feel pain left Gabby unable to distinguish right from wrong in the physical world. One profile summarized a fraction of it:
As Gabby’s baby teeth came in, she mutilated the inside of her mouth. Gabby was unaware of the damage she was causing because she didn’t feel the pain that would tell her to stop. Her parents watch helplessly.
“She would chew her fingers bloody, she would chew on her tongue like it was bubble gum,” Steve Gingras, Gabby’s father, explained. “She ended up in the hospital for 10 days because her tongue was so swelled up she couldn’t drink.”
Pain also keeps babies from putting their fingers in their eyes. Without pain to stop her, Gabby scratched her eyes so badly doctors temporarily sewed them shut. Today she is legally blind because of self-inflicted childhood injuries.
Pain is miserable. Life without pain is a disaster.
UNEEK John Maynard Keynes once purchased a trove of Issac Newton’s original papers at auction. Many had never been seen before, having been stashed away at Cambridge for centuries.
Newton is probably the smartest human to ever live. But Keynes was astonished to find that much of the work was devoted to alchemy, sorcery, and trying to find a potion for eternal life.
Keynes wrote:
I have glanced through a great quantity of this at least 100,000 words, I should say. It is utterly impossible to deny that it is wholly magical and wholly devoid of scientific value; and also impossible not to admit that Newton devoted years of work to it.
I wonder: Was Newton a genius in spite of being addicted to magic, or was being curious about things that seemed impossible part of what made him so successful?
UNEEK Michael Lewis published his first book, Liar’s Poker, in 1989. It was a huge hit. But his next book didn’t come for another decade. He later explained his hiatuses and why he fills his time with hobbies:
Writers can get in this mindset where they feel they have to write another book … the publisher’s on you afterwards and they’re ready to get you going again. And I just always feel that the book is going to be better if I start all over again, start completely fresh as if I’ve never written a book before and give myself at least the option of not writing books.
The best ideas happen when you wait patiently for them to come, which isn’t something you or your boss can schedule.

butterfly Oil to reach $100 a barrel later this year 2022-01-21 03:44
Shafaq News / U.S. crude exports are ramping up due to increasing demand from Asia and Europe and recovering U.S. production from the lows of the coronavirus pandemic.
Surging worldwide demand, supply outages and international political tension have stoked worries around crude supplies, boosting oil prices to the highest levels in seven years, with some predicting crude could even reach $100 per barrel. That has brought in more buyers of U.S. oil, increasing exports and decreasing domestic crude stockpiles.
U.S. seaborne crude exports have increased in recent weeks and are close to 3 million barrels per day so far this month, according to Matt Smith, lead oil analyst for the Americas at Kpler. That's just under the 3.2 million bpd average in crude exports in December, which was the strongest month since February 2020, he said.
Cargoes booked for February are headed to numerous countries including China, South Korea and India, Refinitiv Eikon shipping data showed. Those three are among the largest regular buyers of U.S. crude. Global demand in Asia in 2022 is expected to rise 4% to 37.2 million bpd, the International Energy Agency said Thursday, making it the only major region ahead of 2019's pace.
Exports have helped reduce crude stockpiles in the U.S. Gulf Coast to as low as 220.3 million barrels earlier this month, which was a two-year low.
Increased vehicle traffic means lighter barrels from the United States, which produce a higher volume of gasoline, are attractive to buyers. The IEA said Thursday it expects worldwide gasoline demand to rebound to 26.3 million bpd - just 1% lower than 2019's consumption. Source: Reuters

butterfly Al-Hout houses +8,000 inmates on death row, each cost +10$ a day; source 2022-01-21 07:35
Shafaq News/ The Nasiriyah Central Prison, also known as al-Hout, houses more than 8,000 inmates on death row, a security official said on Friday.
The official, who preferred to remain anonymous, told Shafaq News Agency, "more than 8,000 members of al-Qaeda and ISIS are detained in al-Hout prison in Southern Iraq after being sentenced to the capital penalty. However, they have not been executed even though the majority were convicted four years ago."
"Each prisoner costs the treasury at least 10 dollars a day," the official added.
In Iraq, the death penalty is regulated by national legislation. It is imposed on persons found guilty of a variety of different crimes including murder, treason, espionage, rape, kidnapping, terrorism, war crimes, and drug trafficking.
However, people accused of terrorism face particular scrutiny because their cases are judged based on the Anti-Terrorism Law (No. 13) of 2005. According to articles 2 and 3 of this law, if a person is found guilty of a codified crime, either as an accomplice to the crime or a mastermind of it, the sentence is death.
In many cases, Iraq officials have elevated the Anti-Terrorism Law over the Criminal Procedure Code. This means that people accused of terrorist activities could see the denial of their fundamental civil rights.
A 2005 law carries the death penalty for anyone convicted of "terrorism," which can include membership of an extremist group even if they are not convicted of any specific acts.
Rights groups have warned that executions were being used for political reasons.
butterfly Since the official declaration of victory over IS, Iraq's courts have sentenced hundreds to death for crimes perpetrated during the jihadists' 2014 seizure of around a third of the country and their brutal three-year hold over cities, including Mosul.
But only a small proportion of the sentences have been carried out, as they must be approved by the president.
Barham Saleh, who has held the post since 2018, is known to be personally against capital punishment and has resisted signing execution orders in the past.
Despite Saleh's moderating influence, Iraq in 2019 carried out the fourth-highest number of executions among nations worldwide, after China, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, according to Amnesty International.
Iraq carried out 100 executions that year, one out of every seven worldwide.
They include 21 men convicted of "terrorism" and executed at the notorious Nasiriyah prison in November.
The move sparked condemnations from the United Nations, which described the news as "deeply troubling" and called on Iraq to halt any further planned executions. https://www.shafaq.com/en/Iraq-News/Al-Hout-houses-8-000-inmates-on-death-row-each-cost-10-a-day-source

Butterfly The International Monetary Fund Sends A Warning Message To Countries Whose Debts Are In Dollars Economic Last Update 01/21/2022 | 6:00 PM
International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stressed that the increase in US interest rates could have significant effects on countries with high levels of debt dominated by the dollar.
Georgieva said the Fed's rate hike could "throw cold water" on the weak economic recovery in some countries.
Georgieva warned of the repercussions of raising interest rates in the United States on the weak economic recovery in some countries,
She indicated the need for the US Federal Reserve to clearly communicate its policy plans. The official called on countries with a high level of dollar debt to take action.
And the International Monetary Fund's message to countries with high levels of dollar-denominated debt is: “Act now. If you can extend the maturity, please do so.”
The warnings of the Director of the International Monetary Fund came during her participation in the “Davos” economic forum, held online due to the Corona pandemic, and indicated, during her discussion of the selections for the year 2022, that the International Monetary Fund expects the continuation of global economic recovery, but she stressed that it is “losing some momentum.” Due to the re-spread of the infection, the increase in inflation and the high level of debt.
The official stressed that fighting inflation is not the task of central banks alone, as other policy makers have to play a major role, including by promoting vaccinations to end the Covid-19 pandemic.
She added that inflation was a country-specific phenomenon, which made policy responses more complex in 2022 compared to 2020, the first year of the epidemic. https://almaalomah.me/2022/01/21/577854/

A member of the Parliamentary Finance Committee in the former parliament, Muhammad Al-Shabki, suggested that the budget legislation within Parliament was likely to be delayed, pointing out that many ministries had not resolved their budgets, as well as the final accounts.
Al-Shabki said to "The Information", "The governments did not submit final accounts for all of the past years, but the budget does not depend on preparing these accounts, in addition to the fact that there are problems that will occur in the 2022 budget."
He added, "Parliament has not yet been formed, as well as its parliamentary committees, and this will affect the preparation of the budget, as it will be much delayed and its approval may be, as happened last year."

butterfly Relying On Solar Energy To Reduce Emissions And Generate Electricity
ECONOMIC 01/20/2022 | 10:30 AM The Department of Renewable Energy in the Ministry of Higher Education called, on Thursday, for the preparation of a corrective national strategic plan for the solar energy sectors instead of the one developed in 2012, stressing that solar electricity reduces CO2 emissions.
The Director-General of the Department, Kamal Hussein Latif, said in a statement that "the use of solar energy in generating electric power will contribute to reducing a large percentage of carbon dioxide emissions," explaining that "the contracts made by the government with some international companies to generate 12,000 A megawatt of solar energy will reduce emissions by up to 7 million tons.
Latif revealed that his department had prepared a study that proved that “it is also possible to rely on wind energy or go to nuclear reactors to produce electricity,” stressing that “this approach will drastically reduce emissions and increase the process of exporting oil instead of burning it.
He stressed, "the need to prepare a corrective national strategic plan for the energy sectors instead of the one that was established in 2012, because it achieved only 20 percent of its goals, due to the steady and unexpected growth in energy demand."
Latif explained, "In the Paris Agreement, Iraq committed itself to reducing emissions, like other countries, by 1-2 percent until 2030 and may reach the year 2035, by an additional 13 percent as a conditional reduction, offset by support from industrialized countries to implement reduction projects of 100 billion dollars for years. The next ten years, noting that annual emissions from electricity production are estimated at 40 million tons.
butterfly He added, "The Paris Agreement is not binding in the general sense, but it will cast a shadow over many countries in the world in 2030, because emissions have increased greatly during the last 20 years from 350 to 450 parts per million of carbon dioxide, which is a not insignificant number," expecting that "the ten years will witness In the coming years, a rise in emissions may reach 550 parts per million, and this will lead to the sinking of many cities, especially coastal ones, and other severe climatic problems in the world that will be reflected on the Earth’s climate as a whole.”
For the purpose of controlling the pace of these emissions at the level of Iraq, Latif called for “adopting a new formulation of an energy strategy that includes in its steps the calculation and estimation of emissions with the annual growth occurring in all sectors, which will ensure from now on gradually reaching the required mandatory reduction.”
Latif pointed out that "emissions in Iraq are few compared to many countries, as they represent 0.6 percent compared to China, for example, which has an emission rate of 30 percent of the world's total emissions, in addition to India, some European countries and America," noting that "Iraq It is one of the fragile states most affected by local and regional emissions.” https://almaalomah.me/2022/01/20/577602/

butterfly Iraq signs a contract with Sinopec to develop al-Mansuriya gas field 2022-01-20 05:21
Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Oil has signed a deal with China's Sinopec to develop Iraq's Mansuriya gas field near the borders with Iran.
In a statement to the press on the sidelines of the signing ceremony on Thursday, Minister of Oil Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail said that the state-owned Basra Oil Company will hold 51% stake and the Sinopec will bold 49%.
Sinopec will help Iraq capture and process natural gas from the field and boost output to 300 million cubic feet of gas per day (mcf/d) as a targeted production level.
"The field will provide enough gas to generate 1000 Megawatts of electricity," he said, "the company will secure the financial, technical, and technological support to the Chinese company. The Governorate of Diyala will secure a safe environment for the field's investment."
"In the past five years, Iraq lost 15 billion dollars from importing gas to generate electricity from Iran. It also lost 190 thousand oil barrels to run the [production] plants," he added.
The head of the Contracts and Licensing Department at the Ministry said that the Basra Oil Company has 51% of the contract and will have the same share of revenues. The payments will range between 30 to 70%. This way, If the oil prices drop, the Iraqi state would not be in a difficult situation, and it can still secure 70% of the revenues."
Sinopec's representative in Iraq said that Chinese companies invested 20 billion dollars in Iraq in 2021.
He added that the company will deploy top qualification technologies and start providing the product as soon as possible.
In 2020, Iraq canceled a contract signed with a group led by Turkish Petroleum Corp (TPAO) to develop the field and invited international energy companies to compete to develop it.
Sinopec won the contract in a bidding round held at the oil ministry headquarters in Baghdad in April 2021. https://www.shafaq.com/en/Economy/Iraq-signs-a-co
butterfly Oil prices are falling as they remain near the 8-year peak
Crude oil prices fell in early trading, Thursday, while remaining near an 8-year peak, amid calming international fears over the Omicron pivot, and the resumption of utilities opening in major economies such as the United Kingdom.
The world oil markets began talking about the reasons for the rise in the price of Brent barrel to an average of $100 per barrel during the first half of 2022, which is the highest level since 2014.
At 07:52 GMT, Brent crude futures prices for March delivery fell 0.68%, or 59 cents, to $87.85 a barrel.
The prices of US West Texas Intermediate crude futures for March delivery also fell 0.57%, or 49 cents, to $85.34 a barrel.
The global demand for crude is still increasing, especially in Europe and the United States, with the persistence of cold weather there, which means more demand for heating sources.
And oil is closing near its highest level in 7 years, with increasing fears of a supply shortage. Concern is growing about the already-existing outlook for short-term supply tightness.
butterfly Supply concerns increased this week after the Houthi group in Yemen launched an attack on the United Arab Emirates, the third largest producer in OPEC, while Russia, the world's largest oil producer, intensified its military presence near the border with Ukraine, stoking fears of an invasion.
OPEC officials and analysts say that the rise of oil may continue in the next few months, and prices may exceed the threshold of $ 100 a barrel, due to the recovery of demand despite the spread of the Omicron mutant of the Corona virus and the limited excess production capacity in the OPEC Plus group.
And OPEC Plus, which brings together OPEC, Russia and other producers, is finding it difficult to achieve its goal of increasing monthly production by 400,000 barrels per day. But the International Energy Agency said on Wednesday that the market is expected to turn into a surplus in the first quarter of this year, and that some producers are expected to pump crude at or above all-time highs.
However, the agency warned that commercial oil and fuel stocks in OECD countries are at their lowest levels in 7 years, and that lower supplies could cause the oil market to fluctuate in 2022.

butterfly Demonstrations condemning the leaders of the Shiite framework in Baghdad, calling for the trial of al-Maliki “publicly”
2022-01-20 06:54 Demonstrations condemning the leaders of the Shiite framework in Baghdad calling for the trial of al-Maliki publiclyShafaq News/ Dozens of people took part in demonstrations today, Thursday, in Al-Nusour Square in the center of the capital, Baghdad, against the Shiite coordination framework and its leaders.
The coordinating framework includes Shiite political forces opposed to the results of the legislative elections that took place in October of the year 2021, to become a pole in opposition to the Sadrist bloc led by Muqtada al-Sadr, which topped the highest percentage of seats in the elections and insisted on forming a political majority government in the country.
The demonstrators carried banners accusing the leaders of the framework of financial corruption, while also calling for the trial of the head of the State of Law coalition, Nuri al-Maliki, “publicly”.
Political parties and the popularity of al-Maliki, who held the position of Prime Minister of Iraq for two terms, are responsible for the fall of two-thirds of Iraq to the hands of ISIS in mid-2014, as well as the organization’s perpetration of the massacre at the Speicher military base in the city of Tikrit in 2016, in which 1,700 soldiers were shot dead.
The protesters expressed their displeasure with the attempts to grant the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, and Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, the second term, calling for Muhammad Al-Halbousi, the leader of the “Progress” coalition, to remain in the position of Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament.
butterfly The demonstrators renewed their demands to eliminate financial and administrative corruption, stressing the need to remove the dissolved Baath Party from taking power again in the country.
A group calling itself “Iraqi Protesters” had earlier called for a demonstration in Baghdad under the title “Khamis – the tried – not to be tried.” shafaq.com

butterfly Erdogan urges Turks to convert foreign currency savings into lira
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged his citizens and businesses on Wednesday to convert their foreign currency savings into the lira (national currency), as Ankara seeks to boost demand for the lira.
Erdogan said - after a cabinet meeting - that 163 billion lira ($12.2 billion) had been deposited into accounts, as part of a government system that protects lira deposits from exchange rate drops.
And the new financial mechanism called the Turkish Lira Deposit, which is protected from exchange rate fluctuations, guarantees the lira depositor not to fall victim to exchange rate fluctuations, and to obtain the declared interest, in addition to the difference in the dollar price between the time of deposit and withdrawal.
On another occasion today, Erdogan said that his country had succeeded in manufacturing armed drones, despite the parties that underestimated its capabilities in this regard.
During the 51st meeting with the district and village mayors in the capital, Ankara, he stressed that Turkey is currently emerging as the strongest alternative at a time when the center of global production and trade is changing.
While the existing factories in the industry are operating at full capacity, new investments are constantly being made, the president said.
He added: We have approached the 30 million mark in employment by reaching a higher level than we were before the Corona pandemic.
Erdogan stressed that Turkey's foreign trade volume has reached $500 billion, of which more than $225 billion is for exports. https://rawabetcenter.com/archives/141283

UNEEK Ulysses S. Grant’s wife, Julia, did not like Abraham Lincoln’s wife, Mary.
When President Lincoln asked Grant to accompany him and the First Lady to Ford’s Theater on April 15th, 1865, Grant declined, joking with the president that it was a command from his wife that he stay home. Lincoln responded:
“Of course, General, you have been long from home, fighting in the field, and Mrs. Grant’s instincts should be considered before my request. I am very sorry, however, for the people would only be too glad to see you.”
Lincoln was shot hours later.
Historian Ron Chernow writes:
Grant would long wonder if his presence at Ford’s Theatre might have altered things and whether Julia’s dislike of Mary Lincoln had inadvertently modified the direction of American history.
Would Grant, with his acute battlefield instincts, have sensed the assassin’s tread? Would he have been more attentive to security concerns and brought his own security guard? Would the omnipresent [aide] Beckwith have sat outside the box, buffering his boss from harm?
So much important history hangs by a thread.
UNEEK President Clinton noted in his January 2000 State of the Union speech:
We begin the new century with over 20 million new jobs; the fastest economic growth in more than 30 years; the lowest unemployment rates in 30 years; the lowest poverty rates in 20 years; the lowest African-American and Hispanic unemployment rates on record; the first back-to-back surpluses in 42 years; and next month, America will achieve the longest period of economic growth in our entire history.
That wasn’t an exaggeration. But it marked the beginning of the worst decade for the stock market in modern times.
In January 2010, President Obama noted in his State of the Union speech:
One in 10 Americans still cannot find work. Many businesses have shuttered. Home values have declined. Small towns and rural communities have been hit especially hard. And for those who’d already known poverty, life has become that much harder.
That wasn’t an exaggeration. But it marked the beginning of one of the best periods for the stock market in modern times.
butterfly Economist: The Recovery Of Oil Prices Is A Justification For Restoring The Dollar Exchange Rate
ECONOMIC 01/19/ 2022 | 11:01 AM The economic expert, Nabil Jabbar Al-Ali, expected, on Wednesday, a jump in oil prices in the coming days, after stabilizing the threshold of 75 dollars, stressing that the recovery of oil prices is a justification to reconsider the exchange rate of the dollar.
Al-Ali said in a statement to “The Information” that “the dollar’s exchange rate depends on a fixed price policy that is not linked to the global economy,” noting that “the duty of pure monetary policy is to maintain stability and try to stimulate economic indicators within the country through per capita income, as well as the poverty rate and the indicator the prices".
He added, "The Central Bank is primarily responsible for monetary policy in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, as well as the Ministry of Planning and the Economic Councils, and they must reconsider the dollar exchange rate, especially since this change came based on the requirements of the government's deficit in the year 2020."
Al-Ali pointed out that “the current government is currently facing an economic well-being that may rise in oil prices in the coming days,” stressing “the need to invest the surplus from oil revenues in economic projects.” https://almaalomah.me/2022/01/19/577421/

butterfly US to hand over two stolen artefacts to Iraq
One clay piece is from the ancient city of Ur, while the other is from Babylon Jan 18, 2022 ............... Iraq will receive two stolen artefacts dating back more than 4,000 years from US authorities this week, its foreign ministry announced on Tuesday.
The pieces are made of clay with cuneiform writing. One is from the ancient city of Ur, while the other is from Babylon, the ministry’s spokesman Ahmed Al Sahaf said.
An official ceremony will be held at the Iraqi Consulate in Los Angeles on Thursday to mark the occasion, Mr Al Sahaf added.
He didn’t provide more details about the pieces or how they reached the US.
Ur and Babylon were major cities in ancient Mesopotamia, south of Baghdad.
butterfly The Bible mentions Ur as the birthplace of Prophet Abraham, where wealthy empires flourished. Babylon, meanwhile, was famous for its hanging gardens.
The antiquities will be the latest items Iraq has received from the US and other countries in its long-running struggle to retrieve its stolen cultural trove.
Last year, Iraqis welcomed more than 17,000 ancient artefacts retrieved mainly from the US. The priceless relics, dating back as far as 4,000 years, were looted from Iraq and smuggled onto the black market, mainly after the Gulf War in the 1990s.
Among them was a rare antique clay tablet that bears a portion of the Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest known surviving piece of literature.
butterfly The 127mm by 152mm fragment, which dates back 3,500 to 4,000 years, is known as the Dream Tablet and is written in the Sumerian language. In the epic poem, the hero describes a dream to his mother, predicting the arrival of a new friend.
Many of the objects taken from Iraq were seized from the Oklahoma-based Hobby Lobby. The chain of arts and crafts shops was forced by the US government to relinquish artefacts in 2017 and fined $3 million for failing to act on expert advice that the objects may have been looted or to declare their provenance to the authorities.
Iraq’s archaeological sites have all been badly affected by decades of war, a lack of security and mismanagement.
After the 1991 Gulf War, when a US-led coalition drove Saddam Hussein’s army out from Kuwait, illegal digging was widespread as the former dictator started to lose control of the country. Some of Saddam’s close circle officials were involved in artefact smuggling.
When the US led another coalition to topple Saddam’s regime in 2003, Iraqi artefacts suffered a major blow.
Looters burst into the Iraqi National Museum the day after Baghdad fell to US troops in April, making off with scores of priceless artefacts and leaving the floor littered with shattered pottery.
The US was widely criticised at the time for failing to protect the site. Only a few items were saved. https://www.thenationalnews.com/mena/iraq/2022/01/18/us-to-hand-over-two-stolen-artefacts-to-iraq/

Butterfly Al-Abadi is out of the political calculations as a candidate to head the next Iraqi government
2022-01-18 07:40 Al-Abadi is out of the political calculations as a candidate to head the next Iraqi governmentShafaq News/ A source in the Sadrist movement led by Muqtada al-Sadr revealed, on Tuesday, that the head of the “Victory” coalition Haider al-Abadi has become outside the accounts of the political blocs as a candidate for the position of prime minister of the next Iraqi government.
The source told Shafaq News Agency, “The number of candidates for the position of Prime Minister does not exceed the fingers of a hand,” without mentioning their names.
He added that “Al-Sadr is the first and last decision-maker in choosing the person he deems appropriate to head the next government according to the perspective of the national majority,” apparently in reference to Al-Sadr’s refusal to nominate Al-Abadi for the position of prime minister of the new federal government.
Haider al-Abadi, former Prime Minister of Iraq, and one of the leaders of the coordination framework that includes Shiite political forces opposed to the results of the legislative elections that took place last year.
A source in the coordination framework had previously told Shafaq News Agency, that the framework had tried to push both Haider al-Abadi or Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi as settlement candidates, in front of a mini-list with al-Sadr that included Mustafa al-Kazemi with Sadrist figures.
The head of the Al-Fateh Alliance had made a quick visit to Erbil yesterday, Monday, during which he met with the Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani, the President of Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, and the President of the Regional Government, Masrour Barzani.
butterfly Al-Amiri had proposed, during his meetings in Erbil, the name of Haider al-Abadi, a compromise candidate for prime minister, but this was met with the rejection of leader Massoud Barzani, according to another source.
The framework is trying to persuade al-Sadr to form a “settlement government” in the event that entry into a unified Shiite bloc comprising all parties fails, and this proposal enjoys the support of specific Iranian parties.
However, the private discussions between al-Sadr and the coordination framework did not reach a specific agreement, in addition to al-Sadr’s rejection of the framework’s attempts to include Nuri al-Maliki in the new government synthesis.
The dispute raged between the two Shiite poles represented by the Sadrist movement, which won the highest votes in the elections that took place on the tenth of October last year, and the coordination framework that includes blocs that expressed their rejection of the election results.
The leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, insists on forming a majority government that excludes figures from the coordination framework who played an active role in the political process over the past years.
butterfly On the tenth of last October, Iraq held early legislative elections to get out of a political crisis that swept the country after large demonstrations in the central and southern regions in 2019 in protest against the widespread unemployment in society, the spread of financial and administrative corruption in government departments and institutions, and the deteriorating reality The service and the livelihood, which prompted the former prime minister, Adel Abdul-Mahdi, to resign under popular pressure.
As soon as the preliminary results of the recent elections were announced, the voices of political forces and actors rose in their rejection of losing many seats, accusing them of major fraud in the ballot, which was denied by the executive and judicial authorities, at a time when the United Nations and international organizations praised the integrity of the electoral process. shafaq.com

Radi added, “There are negotiations about the position and tours between the political forces to northern Iraq, in addition to the presence of interventions by the Iranian side to unify the framework with the current.”

Butterfly Qa'ani fails to convince al-Sadr.. Coordination Framework considers offloading al-Maliki 2022-01-17 10:04 Shafaq News/ The Coordination Framework's anticipated meeting with the Sadrist movement is contingent upon the outcomes of Hadi al-Ameri's visit to the capital of the Kurdistan Region, Erbil, a source from inside the Shiite forces consortium said.
Another source told Shafaq News Agency that Esmail Qa'ani, the commander of the Quds Force-the elite clandestine wing of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), convened with the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, at the latter's headquarters in al-Hannana, North of Najaf.
The source said that al-Sadr was resolute about his rejection of the participation of Nouri al-Maliki, the head of the State of Law Coalition, in the next cabinet lineup.
"Qa'ani's is in a meeting with the Coordination Framework leaders at the residence of Haidar al-Abadi, the head of al-Nasr (Victory) alliance, to discuss al-Sadr's demands," the source said.
"The political formula will definitely change and the table will be turned upside-down if the anticipated meeting between the Sadrist movement and the Coordination Framework takes place and the two rivals agreed to reorganize the Shiite house together," another source stated.
butterfly "The official in charge of Iranian-Iraqi file, Qa'ani, visiting Iraq currently demanded the Framework forces to be flexible and accept al-Sadr's proposals to achieve Iraq's ultimate interests even if it is not in favor of their personal and partisan interests."
" Qa'ani partially achieved the goal of his visit. He was able to break the impasse between the Sadrist movement's leader and the Coordination Framework. The Framework will hold a decisive strategic meeting upon the return of al-Ameri from Erbil, since the Shiite forces are committed to sustaining the strategic ties with its allies, the Kurds particularly."
"The proposed scenario is annexing the 33 MPs, bar their leader, with al-Fatah (Conquest) alliance. This means that the State of Law will not be present by its name if things go as planned. The MPs of the State of Law alliance will also have their share in the government," the source added, "this scenario is the first choice at the moment."
"The entire political formula might be changed, including the Parliament Presidium. The Sunni leaders might go back to square one and grapple for the Parliament Speaker's chair," the source continued, "the next few hours, until tomorrow, might be loaded with plot twists." https://shafaq.com/en/Iraq-News/Qa-ani-fails-to-convince-al-Sadr-Coordination-Framework-considers-offloading-al-Maliki
