Shell: $9.1 billion    Chevron: $6.3 billion    BP: $6.2 billion    Exxon: $5.4 billion

butterfly   SULAIMANI — Crude oil prices were down on Tuesday (May 17) compared to the previous day.

The price of Brent crude was at $115.1 up from $109.2 the previous day, and the price of WTI crude was at $115.0 up from $108.4.

butterfly   2022-05-17 03:42 Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, the U.S. dollar (USD) exchange rates against the Iraqi dinar (IQD) settled in the markets of Baghdad.

Shafaq News Agency correspondent said that the Central al-Kifah and Al-Harthiya exchanges are trading the USD at 148050 IQD to 100.

Our correspondent said that the selling and buying rates of 100 USD in the local markets of the Iraqi capital rested at 148500 and 147500 IQD, respectively.

In the capital of the Kurdistan Region, Erbil, the selling and buying rates settled at 148300 and 148100 IQD to 100 USD.

butterfly   2022-05-17 02:18   Shafaq News/ Gold prices firmed on Tuesday, as a pullback in the dollar supported demand for greenback-priced bullion and countered pressure from a recovery in U.S. Treasury yields.

Spot gold was up 0.2% at $1,826.95 per ounce, by 0542 GMT. U.S. gold futures gained 0.6% to $1,824.40.

The dollar fought for a footing after falling from near 20-year highs while the tumbling Chinese yuan found a floor, as investors trimmed bets on whether U.S. interest rate hikes will drive further gains.

A weaker dollar makes gold more attractive for buyers holding other currencies.

However, benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yields climbed, limiting demand for zero-yield gold.

"Now that we have the much-needed clearout on gold markets, longer-term holders could start to position for the eventual southbound turn on the U.S. hard economic data," said Stephen Innes, managing partner at SPI Asset Management.

Bullion is seen as a safe haven during economic crises and a hedge against inflation.

Gold slid to a 3-1/2-month low on Monday, but reversed course later, tracking a fall in Treasury yields.

Spot gold may bounce more into a range of $1,840 to $1,849 per ounce, as the downtrend from the April 18 high of $1,998.10 may have reversed, Reuters' technical analyst Wang Tao said.

Spot silver edged up 0.1% to $21.61 per ounce, while platinum dropped 0.4% to $941.99, and palladium fell 0.9% to $2,007.69.

"With China on the verge of reopening and likely adding more stimulus, it benefits all hard commodities. And palladium is ultimately used in industrial applications, particularly within the auto sector; that segment could benefit from ports reopening in China," Innes said.

Improving demand and lower supply will help palladium and rhodium swing back into deficit this year and reduce platinum's surplus, consultants Metals Focus said on Monday.   Source: Reuters

butterfly   2022-05-17 06:14 Shafaq News/ The Iraqi President, Barham Salih, said that Iraq supports international and regional cooperation to confront terrorism, economic challenges, and climate change.

On Tuesday, Saleh received the new ambassadors of Canada, Gregory Galligan, Iran, Muhammad Kazem Al Sadiq, and the Chinese ambassador separately.

While receiving the ambassadors, the Iraqi President said that Iraq's foreign policy is based on "establishing solid, balanced relations to strengthen political and economic cooperation, and overcome differences and tensions in the region through dialogue."

He expressed the necessity of "joint international and regional cooperation to confront the global challenges including combatting terrorism and extremism, addressing economic fluctuations and health crises, and confronting severe climate changes."

The new ambassadors hoped to develop relations with Iraq in various fields.

A ministry statement said: "The Jordanian Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Youssef Al-Shamali and the Iraqi ambassador to Amman received the minister."

The statement stated: "This visit comes within the framework of discussions with the Jordanian side regarding the latest developments of the joint economic city between the two countries."

butterfly   2022-05-17 15:17   Shafaq News / The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, that corrupt people in Sinjar hinder achieving any progress.

Plasschaert, said during her briefing to UNSC on the situation in Iraq, "the lack of clear-cut coordination and implementation mechanisms, the dominance of partisan interests, and the ongoing presence of spoilers significantly hamper meaningful progress. International observers have been deployed for less."

Violent skirmishes took place in Sinjar earlier this month, after YBS refused to exit the district in implementation of the Sinjar agreement.

On October 9, Baghdad and Erbil reached an agreement to normalize the situation in Sinjar, according to which the district will be jointly administrated.

ISIS invaded Sinjar district in 2014 and committed a massacre against its residents, before the Peshmerga forces regained it the following year.

However, the Iraqi army backed by Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi forces invaded the region due to the tension between Erbil and Baghdad against the independence referendum held in 2017.

There are currently two local governments for Sinjar, one of which was appointed by the federal government authorities, and the second is the elected government, which is running its business from Duhok governorate.

The PKK reject repeated calls from the Kurdistan Region to leave its territory, which gets subjected to Turkish attacks that impede the return of tens of thousands of displaced Yazidis to their homes.

butterfly   If it ain't for the covid it is the dust storms: 2022-05-16 15:49

Shafaq News / On Monday, more than 110 people were transferred to hospitals due to the dust storm that chocked several Iraqi regions.

Chamchamal Health Department said that more than 30 people, including children, were taken to hospitals. Some of them were in critical conditions and suffered from shortness of breath.

Al-Sulaymaniyah Health also reported that 70 cases of suffocation were recorded during the past hours, while the Garmyan administration recorded 10 cases.

Many Iraqi governorates were shrouded in thick brown dust due to strong winds.

Today, Basra, Baghdad, Al-Sulaymaniyah, and Najaf airports suspended flights due to severe dust storms.

The meteorologist Sadeq Attia said on Facebook that "the dust storm would continue until Tuesday noon, in the cities of the south and east of the country," also expecting that "it will be worse tomorrow morning."

A dust storm, also called a sandstorm, is a meteorological phenomenon common in arid and semi-arid regions. Dust storms arise when a gust front or other strong wind blows loose sand and dirt from a dry surface.

Butterfly   2022-05-16 11:16   Shafaq News/ Iraq's Minister of Oil, Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail, on Monday said that his country is ramping up its production capacity goals, targeting six million barrels per day (bpd) in 2027 and eight million bpd in 2029.

"The Ministry is expediting the optimal plans and projects to invest the associated and non-associated gas in order to bolster the energy sector, curtail the reliance on fossil fuel, conserve the environment, and reduce harmful gas emissions," he said before the 29th Middle East Petroleum and Gas Conference in Manama, Bahrain's capital city.

The Ministry affirmed that Iraq "is committed to the stability of the international oil market via the cooperation with the country members in OPEC+ to face the challenges facing the market, restore its balance, and retain the gains it achieved recently."

OPEC+, which achieved a historic reduction of 9.7 million barrels per day between May 2020 and July last year, is unwinding cuts due to improving demand. It was adding about 400,000 bpd to the market every month and increased that to 432,000 bpd for May and June.

Brent, the global benchmark for two thirds of the world's oil, was trading 1.6 per cent lower at $109.76 a barrel at 12.53pm UAE time on Monday, while West Texas Intermediate, the gauge that tracks US crude, was down 1.percentent to $109.01 a barrel.

Dave   SADR still after the corruption....aint backing down

butterfly   As OPEC said a few weeks ago, they will raise the prices, not lower them. So those that think "any" president controls the gas price, need to re-study what is actually happening in the world/USA.

butterfly   Dave good hope he is successful, but we may be dead by the time that happens.

butterfly   I have been reading where Iraq is going after ISIS and taking out a lot of them.

Dave   No more MacDonalds in Russia though.......

butterfly   Every news channel is told what they can report. Funny thing is they broadcast Tucker Carlson's show---portions of it. Then they just broadcasted Rand Paul, the only one objected, to sending those extra billions to Ukraine.

Shell: $9.1 billion   Chevron: $6.3 billion   BP: $6.2 billion   Exxon: $5.4 billion

butterfly   2022-05-16 06:26   Shafaq News/ The leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, lashed out at the Iraqi judiciary for backing the "disgraceful deeds" of what he called the "blocking one-third", hinting that he might pull out the streets card.

In a public speech he delivered earlier today, al-Sadr said, "the people are suffering from poverty...the audacity has reached a point that laws that might benefit the people are annulled shamelessly," in reference to the revocation of the emergency food security bill.

"They are aiming at the people. They want them to kneel. It is more surprising that the judiciary, knowingly or not, are aiding the shameless acts of the blocking one-third."

"Authority has blinded them from the burden, fear, poverty, loss, militias, external reliance, fear of normalization, and diseases."

Al-Sadr warned of the public protests that might erupt. "You may not be safe from the roar of wronged people."

Yesterday, Sunday, the maverick Shiite cleric announced a temporary shift to the opposition after the Iraqi political forces, including the Sadrist movement, failed to form a government.

Al-Sadr said in a statement, "I am honored that the lawmakers affiliated with me are the biggest bloc in the history of Iraq. I am honored I successfully formed the largest trans-quota bloc. I am honored I depended upon myself, not external parties. I am honored I did not have to resort to Judiciary to sustain the needs of the people and form the government. However, because of the internal and external squawking on myself and the notion of 'national majority government', we were not able to make it. It is an entitlement of the Independent forces."

"The parties that pretend to be independent did not support us. Therefore, we have only one choice left: moving to opposition for thirty days," he said.

"If the parties and political blocs, including those we allied with them, it would be great. If not, we will have another decision we announce later."

butterfly   2022-05-16 02:13  Shafaq News / Gold prices edged down in choppy trading on Monday as a strong dollar hurt demand for the greenback-priced metal and set it on course for a more than three-month trough hit in the previous session.

However, a fall in benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yields limited losses in zero-yield gold, helping keep prices above the key psychological support level of around $1,800 per ounce.

Spot gold was down 0.1% at $1,808.61 per ounce, as of 0539 GMT. U.S. gold futures dipped 0.2% to $1,804.80.

Marking a fourth straight weekly decline, gold prices on Friday fell more than 1% to $1,798.86 per ounce, before closing at $1,811.15.

Concerns around global growth helped the dollar start the week just off a 20-year high against its peers, making rival safe-haven gold less attractive for buyers holding other currencies.   (Reuters)

butterfly   2022-05-16 06:27   Shafaq News / The office of Nouri al-Maliki, the head of the State of Law Coalition, announced that the Coordination Framework (CF) and its allies will hold an emergency meeting to discuss the recent statements of Muqtada al-Sadr, the head of the Sadrist movement.

Al-Maliki's Secretary, Hisham al-Rikabi, said that the meeting will be held today evening, at former Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi's office, noting that CF will announce a clear position on the latest political developments.

The CF will definitely hold more talks with political parties to put an end to the political impasse, al-Rikabi added.

Zig: Welcome to Zig's Place, a chat room for dinar speculators and others....discuss any topic that you wish

NORV   Where is my buddy Dave?  Got a new article for ya...appears they are fighting between floating and a LOP. lol

NORV   The Iraqi Journal of Economic Sciences publishes an article on the Iraqi dinar between the polemics of flotation and devaluation

Mustansiriyah University   2022/05/15 12:10:01   The Iraqi Journal of Economics, issued by the College of Administration and Economics - Al-Mustansiriya University, published in its seventy-first issue for the month of December in 2021 an article under the title (A case and opinion / the Iraqi dinar between the polemics of floating and reduction) by Dr. Mazhar Muhammad Salih / Adviser to the Prime Minister for Financial and Economic Affairs.

The article indicates that despite the monetary policy of the Central Bank of Iraq following the shock method in adjusting the value of the Iraqi dinar with the procedures of December 19, 2020, but the reduction in the dinar exchange rate at a rate of 20% was identical to the deficit in the current account of the Iraqi balance of payments relative to the GDP The total, which was estimated at about (negative 20%) for the year 2020.

The debate remained among some economists about the importance of the Central Bank of Iraq resorting to the floating currency philosophy as a prelude to gradual adjustment instead of adopting the method of shock and surprise to the market with a low, alternative external value of the Iraqi dinar overnight. Overnight!).

Floating the currency exchange rate in essence means adopting an exchange system according to which the external value of the national currency is determined according to the forces of supply and demand in the exchange market. This comes in contrast to the fixed exchange system, in which the monetary authority or the central bank determines the value of the dinar against foreign currency in advance and according to the rules of its monetary policy.

NORV   In spite of the foregoing, and in order to explain the importance of the policy of (floating the Iraqi dinar and adopting an equilibrium rate in the exchange market instead of (devaluation) according to the (shock) method that occurred in the value of the Iraqi dinar at the end of 2020, we must state in this regard the following:

First: In our economy of a unilateral rentier (sovereign) nature, the Central Bank of Iraq (the central market) is the monopoly in providing sources of foreign currency supply through open market operations.

Second: In the developing (non-rentier) economies that are diversified in the sources of supply of their foreign currency and their trade openness to import and export through free market forces.

But the question remains about the importance of the flotation, whether the Iraqi market cannot correct the exchange rates in the flotation when the central bank raises its hand as a central market so that the forces of demand appear in a market in which supply falters without continuous and intensive intervention that meets the demand for foreign currency without the intervention of the monetary authority. itself. https://uomustansiriyah.edu.iq/web_article.php?post_id=5799_221&lang=ar

NORV   "The debate remained among some economists about the importance of the Central Bank of Iraq resorting to the floating currency philosophy as a prelude to gradual adjustment instead of adopting the method of shock and surprise to the market with a low, alternative external value of the Iraqi dinar overnight. Overnight!)."

NORV   Pretty clear..."resorting to the floating currency philosophy as a prelude to gradual adjustment instead of adopting the method of shock and surprise to the market with a low, alternative external value"

Sadr explained he had failed in his efforts to form a national government due to increased pressure from both inside and outside of the movement.

He stated the party would make a new decision if the government could not be formed within one month.

Sadr announced he was "honored” to not resort to the courts in order to form a new government and stated he was "honored to have the largest parliamentary bloc in the history of Iraq.”

"We have an option left that we must try, which is going to the national opposition for a period of no less than thirty days,” he said.

Sadr gave the Coordination Framework, a loose coalition of Shia parties which has opposed the Sadrist Movement in parliament, a period of 40 days beginning on March 31 to reach an agreement with other parties on forming a new government.

The period for parliament to elect a new president of the republic passed in early April, following delays parliament sessions that MPs refused to attended, leading to a lack of quorum necessary to hold the sessions.

butterfly   SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) representative in Baghdad told NRT on Sunday (May 15) the sum of 200 billion Iraqi dinars (IQD) has been transferred from Baghdad to Erbil.

The representative, Faris Issa, said the funds are now in the KRG Ministry of Finance’s bank accounts.

Two sources from the KRG Council of Ministers and the finance ministry told NRT previously that there was no official word on whether the 200 billion IQD would be sent.

The KRG began to receive a monthly stipend of 200 billion IQD per month in July 2021 under an agreement with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

Despite the value of a barrel of oil exceeding $100 a month, the government still faces delays in distributing salaries.

University teachers and employees in Sulaimani and Halabja have been protesting for more than a week demanding their March salaries from the KRG.

Raptor22   What year Bolivar should I buy?

Zig  Raptor22 : Hi...I suggest you wait for sheila to answer you as I know that she has that currency..:)

Raptor22   Thanks Zig

Zig   Having written that, please remember that we give No investment advice here....this chat room was established to "discuss" our various speculative investments not to recommend that you buy//invest in anything....Please make your own decisions and not based on anything you read in here as we only give our opinions....My only advice: Never invest more that you can afford to lose in any currency speculation....

Sheila   Raptor22 Some of my smaller notes are 2009. The 1M Notes purchased appear to be 2020. Thinking if you stay close to that span, then you should be good to go holding Bolivar.

Sheila   Raptor22 not giving you financial advice. all speculation at every step of the way. good thing is you can resell at discount, yet getting most of your funds back. generally speaking, most speculations don't have capability built into risks being taken.

Raptor22   sheila I read the 2021 digital boliver 10 million is good to get

Raptor22   i uunderstand no financial advise    Thanks for your advise/opinion

Sheila   Raptor22 I don't know about digital bolivar. Everything we purchased is hard currency. What a roller coaster ride this has been!!!

Dr Malcolm Roberts  Zig: Welcome to Zig's Place, a chat room for dinar speculators and others....discuss any topic that you wish >>>>>

Dr Malcolm Roberts  Hey brother: I am taking up your offer "on any topic is welcome on your site." I believe I would have been an early bird who got on this IQD bandwagon for I had even been an gent to sell these notes early in the piece - almost tow decades. However, I jumped off the selling craze when I soon realized it not not to an overnight "She'll be be COMING DOWN the THE MOUNTAIN when she come" thingy bit. Sure those two decased a\ahve come and gone and she's still up that Mountain from the day I joined this crazy ride.

Honestly - I am not a fry pan to dampen hearts and dreams: I sincerely believe those Iraqi scoundrels are very good at having pulled the wools well over our eyes and even up to our heads to say the least - with having got us part with our heard earned funds to buy toilet paper worth dinars just as we had then rushed to get toilet papers when CoVID hit us over two years ago at super market shelves. Remember?

sheila  @Dr Malcolm Roberts welcome here today  - only 12.5 years history in these currency speculations

Dr Malcolm Roberts   she's still up that Mountain from the day I joined this crazy ride. Remember?

Dave   Xanax helps.........

Dr Malcolm Roberts   Hey - since I have come this far - I'll hang on to my toilet paper worth of IQDs tissue papers with great printed pictures of ancient rulers of Iraq for God knows how long: Just in case before my last straws run out and I fling them all in the nearest rubbish dump and not temp some idiots ride this merry-go-round ride as I have so thus far.

Dave   willing to trade TP fer your Dinar.......  triple ply!!!

Dr Malcolm Roberts   But since those crazy days, I am now into more exciting things in life. I am asking people on " WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE"? Many people are still not able to give me goOd adequate answers to keep me satisfied. So, I throw this question back to my fellow DINARIANS reading her now. i WILL LOVE TO HEAR BACK FROM AS MANY AS WILL REPLY ME. I DOUBT IT, THOUGH. Lets find out while we play this alternative MUCH MORE HEALTHIER GAME while we manage to ride on this CRACY RIDE singing MORE OF THAT she'll BE COMING DOWNTHAT blooming Mountain a BIT louder: Hear???

Dr Malcolm Roberts   Thanks Dave: I'll hang on to them a little longer - but I'll fling them into some rubbish dump and not add further cause any one riding this crazy roller-coaster ride to no get to POSSIBLY nowhere !!!!!!!

sheila   @Dr Malcolm Roberts To learn. To be curious. To do better.

Dave   nothing ventured nothing gained

UNEEK   @Dr Malcolm Roberts Hello and welcome to Zig's place - I would like to address your question and offer "my" thoughts - I feel that we all have a purpose here in this human form - I have questioned my purpose for many years and even today I still wonder what I am "supposed" to do till I am unable to do -- I will offer you what I have been relying on as an answer until I find a better one - I feel that we are here to accomplish 2 things -- to grow in wisdom and to expand our capacity to love - now in my humble opinion that is a pretty tall order -

Dr Malcolm Roberts   Of course, I would be delighter if I am proven wrong, though I have waited thus far too long for some to rub the FACES of many of my loved friends and relatives who made me part of the skeptic I have become. LOL !!!!!!!!

Sheila   @Dr Malcolm Roberts Skeptic yet still believer.

Sheila   @Dr Malcolm Roberts 20 Years Ago? How did you learn about Dinar those 20 years ago?

Zig   sheila : I know some people that bought around 2003

Sheila Zig And how did they learn about Dinar?

Butterfly   SULAIMANI — The US dollar to Iraqi dinar exchange rates were up in the Kurdistan Region’s markets on Saturday (May 14).

$100 was at 148,400 Iraqi dinars, 250 IQD higher than the previous day.

100 British pounds was at 170,000 Iraqi dinars, 2,000 IQD lower, and 100 euros was at 156,500 IQD, 1,500 Iraqi dinars lower.

butterfly   SULAIMANI — Crude oil prices were up on Saturday (May 14) compared to the previous day.

The price of Brent crude was at $111.55, up from $108.3 the previous day, and the price of WTI crude was at $110.49, up from $106.6.

butterfly   2022-05-14 05:53   Shafaq News/ Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. said May 13 it expects to more than double its equity crude oil sales to 935,000 kl or 5.88 million barrels in fiscal year 2022-23 (April-March), up from 357,000 kl in the previous fiscal year due mainly to increasing sales of Iraqi and US crude.

In Iraq, the operator of the Gharraf oil field in which Japex holds a stake, Malaysia's Petronas, is working with the Iraqi government to bring about a production capacity boost that has been delayed by pandemic impacts coupled with some local security concerns.

"It is true that our investment target, or a production increase has been delayed unfortunately," Michiro Yamashita, Japex director and senior managing executive officer, told an earnings press conference.

"Petronas, the operator, is holding various talks with the Iraqi government as it proceeds its development works, and it is being worked on to raise the production capacity appropriately," Yamashita said.

Output at the Gharraf field, located in southern Iraq, had been set to rise to 230,000 b/d by the end of 2020. It produced around 130,000 b/d in April, up from an average of 100,000 b/d over January-March, a company spokesman said separately.

While declining to elaborate on the timelines for reaching the 230,000 b/d output target, Yamashita told S&P Global Commodity Insights that "the most sensible production plan" is under discussions. He said this takes into consideration the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on oil demand and current OPEC+ oil production quotas.

The Gharraf field started production in August 2013 under a technical service contract with Iraq 's South Oil Co. The consortium consists of Petronas with a 45% stake, Japex Garraf with 30% and North Oil Co. with 25%. Japex holds a 55% stake in Japex Garraf, with state-owned Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp. holding 35% and Mitsubishi 10%.

butterfly   Japex, meanwhile, expects its US tight oil production to rise to 880,000 barrels in FY 2022-23, up more than seven times from 120,000 barrels, as it expands its upstream investments, Yamashita said.

Japex will invest about $500 million from 2022 to 2024 to develop tight oil interests in the southern US, including existing assets and interests to be acquired later this year by its US subsidiary.

Japex said its investments in the wellbore interests acquired in Texas and Oklahoma will start raising its tight oil production from the middle of this year.

Japex entered US tight oil development in 2012 by acquiring development interests in the Eagle Ford formation in Middle McCowen, southern Texas. Since then the company has continued to invest in its assets, including the acquisition of additional interests in the same formation in 2013.

In the previous fiscal year ended March 31, Japex pulled out of its operated oil sands project and a shale gas project in Canada, putting an end to its oil and gas projects in the country as part of its business portfolio review.

It sold its shares in Japan Canada Oil Sands, or JACOS, which was wholly owned by its subsidiary Canada Oil Sands, or CANOS, to Alberta-based HE Acquisition Corp., ending its involvement in Canadian oil sands that started in the 1970s.

Meanwhile, Japex plans to raise its LNG sales by 23% year on year to 363,000 mt in FY 2022-23, up by 68,000 mt year on year, as it had deferred the scheduled procurement of a spot LNG cargo in the previous fiscal year because of high spot LNG prices.

butterfly   2022-05-14 09:38   Shafaq news/ The Group of Seven industrialized nations said Saturday they would never recognize the borders Russia is trying to shift in its war against Ukraine and pledged enduring support for Kyiv.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 but Kyiv’s forces managed to push Moscow’s troops back from the capital. The conflict is now well into its third month.

“We will never recognize borders Russia has attempted to change by military aggression, and will uphold our engagement in the support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, including Crimea, and all states,” the G7 foreign ministers said in a statement after three days of talks in northern Germany.

They also vowed to expand sanctions to include sectors on which Russia is dependent and keep supplying Ukraine with weapons to help it repel Russia’s invasion.

“We reaffirm our determination to further increase economic and political pressure on Russia, continuing to act in unity,” they said.

Western countries have supplied Ukraine with artillery, anti-aircraft missiles, anti-tank weapons and other powerful material, but Kyiv has been pushing allies for more support.

As the war drags on, the G7 foreign ministers also highlighted the growing impact of the war on poorer countries, especially in the area of food security.

The ministers also slammed Belarus over its stance on the war.

“We ... call on Belarus to stop enabling Russia’s aggression and to abide by its international obligations,” they said.    Source: AFP

Butterfly   SULAIMANI — Crude oil prices were up on Friday (May 13) compared to the previous day.  The price of Brent crude was at $108.3, up from $105.2 the previous day, and the price of WTI crude was at $106.6, up from $103.2.

butterfly   2022-05-13 01:35 Shafaq News/ Oil prices extended gains on Friday but were headed for their first weekly loss in three weeks as worries about inflation and China's COVID lockdowns slowing global growth offset concerns about dwindling fuel supplies from Russia.

Brent crude futures were up $1.81, or 1.7%, at $109.26 a barrel at 0403 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures climbed $1.55, or 1.5%, to $107.68 a barrel.

Both benchmark contracts were, however, on track to post declines for the week, with Brent set to drop nearly 3% and WTI nearly 2%.

The market is continuing to be pushed and pulled by the prospect of a European Union ban on Russian oil tightening supply and concerns about faltering global demand.

SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said that oil traders were looking "for a glimmer of light at the end of China's gloomy lockdown tunnel".

"Still, we continuously end up at square one with lower case counts weighted against the authorities doubling down on their zero COVID policy," he added.

Inflation and aggressive rate rises have driven the U.S. dollar to 20-year highs, which has capped oil price gains as a stronger dollar makes oil more expensive when purchased in other currencies.

Analysts, however, continue to focus on the prospect of a European Union ban on Russian oil, after Moscow imposed sanctions this week on European units of state-owned Gazprom and after Ukraine halted a key gas transit route.

"With European natural gas prices soaring, it is inevitable that some spillover into oil will occur," OANDA senior market analyst Jeffrey Halley said in a note.

butterfly   "An escalation by Russia on the sanctions front is likely to flow into oil price strength," he added.

An International Energy Agency report on Thursday highlighted the duelling factors in the market, saying rising oil production in the Middle East and the United States and a slowdown in demand growth are "expected to fend off an acute supply deficit amid a worsening Russian supply disruption".

The agency said it saw output from Russia falling by nearly 3 million barrels per day (bpd) from July, or about three times more than is currently displaced, if sanctions for its war on Ukraine are expanded or if they deter further buying.    Source: Reuters

butterfly   Oil prices fell more than 1 percent today, Thursday, during a volatile week, as economic fears of recession roiled global financial markets, outweighing supply concerns and geopolitical tensions in Europe.

Brent crude futures fell $1.25, or 1.2%, to $106.26 a barrel by 04:03 GMT, and West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell $1.24, or 1.2 percent, to $104.47 a barrel.

Oil prices are under pressure this week, along with global financial markets amid fears of higher interest rates for the US dollar, which is the strongest in two decades, and concerns about inflation and a possible recession, as the prolonged shutdown of COVID-19 has affected China, the world's largest importer of crude.

However, supply concerns stemming from the Russian invasion of Ukraine have boosted the market, with prices rising more than 35% so far this year.

The European Union's suspended embargo on oil from Russia, a major supplier of crude and fuel to the bloc, could further tighten global supplies, supporting prices.

butterfly   SULAIMANI — Crude oil prices were up on Thursday (May 12) compared to the previous day.

The price of Brent crude was at $105.2, up from $104.9 the previous day, and the price of WTI crude was at $103.2, up from $102.1.

Most of the added languages are spoken by several million people in Africa, India, and South America and they bring the total number of languages Google Translates accommodates to 133.

butterfly   Al-Maliki: Parliament's intention to question current ministers is a legal violation

Thursday 12 May 2022 23:40 coalition, Nuri al-Maliki, considered the Parliament's intention to question current ministers as a legal violation.

And he said in a tweet on Twitter: The current parliament’s intention to question a number of ministers in the expired government, dismiss them, and grant confidence to new ministers is a clear legal violation, because the current parliament was not the one who voted to form this government and did not give them confidence until questioning them. https://www.ninanews.com/Website/News/Details?Key=975784

butterfly   2022-05-12 16:28   Shafaq News/ The Shiite Coordination Framework and its allies are awaiting an initiative from the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani

The leader of the Al-Fateh Alliance, affiliated with the Framework, Ali Al-Zubeidi, told Shafaq News Agency, "It is not true that part of the coordination framework belongs to the opposition."

"The Framework forces continue their meetings with the political forces to end the political deadlock."

Al-Zubeidi indicated that the Framework awaits an important initiative by the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani."

In turn, the leader of the Framework, Ali Al-Fatlawi, confirmed to our Agency, "The news about an agreement that a part of the Framework stand by Al-Sadr to form a majority government, and another part would be in the opposition is incorrect, and there is no such agreement or proposal.

"The Shiite coordination Framework is still firm that it would form the government or be in opposition with all its forces."

The Coordination Framework launched a 9-point initiative earlier, while the Sadrist movement called on independent MPs to ally and form the government.

A source revealed to our Agency that 46 independent MPs met at MP Haidar al-Shamkhi's residence to discuss the latest political developments. A new decisive meeting will be held in the next few days.

Since the Iraqi Parliament held its first session on the ninth of last January, the situation became more complicated with the Framework insisting on having the "Shiite" largest Bloc because the prime minister is entitled to the Shiites, while the leader of the Sadrist movement Muqtada al-Sadr refuses to engage in an alliance with the Framework forces and adheres to excluding the leader of the State of Law coalition Nuri al-Maliki from any alliance.

butterfly   On the other hand, the dispute between the two Kurdish poles continues; the Kurdistan Democratic Party says the position of the President of the Republic is a "Kurdish entitlement, and not for a specific party." At the same time, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan asserts that this position is its right.

The scene became more critical after al-Sadr announced his withdrawal from negotiations to form the next government and choose the next prime minister giving this task to the Framework to solve in 40 days but the Framework "failed."

The Sadrist Movement leader then called for independent deputies to form the next Iraqi government within 15 days.

The Shiite Cleric renewed his call to some of the Framework's forces to join the Alliance with the Sadrist bloc.

This situation created differences of opinions among the independent representatives over the initiatives of the Shiite rivals, the Sadrist movement, and the Coordination Framework.

Al-Shammari added that the current government sold 8 tons of gold reserves in the Central Bank in northern Iraq without knowing the reason for that.

This is happening after alleged attempts to divide the Sunni component of their rival alliance seems to have fallen short.

Some seem to have hoped that backing a sheikh long known for being the source of many problems would lessen the strength of a young politician from the same province who currently holds the highest position a Sunni in the country can aspire to.

The former Anbar Awakening “hero” would in the successive years spend a significant amount of time here as well as abroad, sources told Al-Monitor last year, though he was said to travel to Baghdad on occasion.

Suleiman had been known as a fugitive after supporting protests and anti-government activities included an armed insurrection in 2014 that many see as a prime reason why IS was able to take over and wreak so much destruction on both his own province and the rest of the country.

In 2014, Reuters reported that Suleiman had “recounted plotting ambushes against Iraqi special forces, which he said killed more than 100.” It added that he had “described how Islamic State fighters and his Sunni rebels gradually came together” against the government of former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, with whom Suleiman had previously collaborated.

butterfly   Iraq fought a brutal war against IS that left thousands dead between 2014 and December 2017, when it officially declared victory within its borders against the international terrorist organization.

Cells continue to conduct attacks throughout the country, however, and sources claimed to Al-Monitor that IS attacks have killed over a dozen people in the past two weeks in Anbar, Iraq’s westernmost province, where the largest tribal confederation is Suleiman’s Dulaim.

Anbar is also the home province of Iraq’s parliament speaker, Mohamed al-Halbusi, the youngest ever person to hold this position. Halbusi is also from a much smaller tribe than Suleiman’s Dulaim.

The public images of the two men from the same province are starkly different. Halbusi is mostly seen in business suits and slicked-back hair, or in jeans and other “Western” clothing, and his wife does not wear a headscarf. Suleiman, however, is almost invariably seen in a traditional thobe and headdress.

Some see Halbusi's support in Anbar as a sign of the weakening tribe-based power structures. Iraqi Sunnis have over the years claimed that Saddam Hussein, for all his faults, fostered a longing for a strong state, and that thus tribalism tended to be stronger among Iraq’s southern Shiite populations than its western Sunni ones.

It is, however, axiomatic that of the two major cities in eastern Anbar – Fallujah and Ramadi – the first is where religion holds sway, and the second is where tribes do.

Halbusi is originally from Garma (or al-Karma) near Fallujah, while Suleiman was born in Baghdad but for many years held sway over the vast Dulaim tribal networks centered in Ramadi.

Halbusi seems to have proven he had the experience to do the job since he took on the role in September 2018. In January he was re-elected to the position, while the country has been unable to decide on either a president or a prime minister over six months after the Oct. 10 vote.

butterfly   As Al-Monitor reported after those elections that Iraq’s Sunni community seems to have voted heavily for Halbusi’s party.

Iraq is believed to be about 60% Shiite Arab with significant Sunni Arab and Kurdish communities and other minorities.

Iran-linked parties have in recent weeks been struggling to divide a largely compact, diverse, and collaborative alliance called Save the Homeland that includes Halbusi’s Sunni alliance, the country’s largest Kurdish party (the Kurdistan Democratic Party, or KDP), and a movement under the popular Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Their apparent support for Suleiman’s much-publicized return to Baghdad is widely seen as part of these efforts.

However, this attempt seems unlikely to succeed.

In 2018, when he was governor of Anbar, shortly before being named parliament speaker, Halbusi had said that “there needs to be normality,” with arms under state control and “police on the ground and the army on the bases, not at the checkpoints.”

However, Suleiman wants more arms in the hands of local armed groups, similar to how he and his fellows in arms helped to defeat al-Qaeda in Anbar over a decade ago.

Iraqi militia power plays bring back outcast Sunni leader

Shafaq News/ Following series of meetings between Kurdistan Democratic Party and their Shiite and Sunnies allies in Erbil in order to form a majority government, a high delegation from Iran-linked Coordination Framework (CF) who oppose the majority government project, are planning visit the Kurdistan Region’s capital in the coming days to speak to the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

However, Suleiman wants more arms in the hands of local armed groups, similar to how he and his fellows in arms helped to defeat al-Qaeda in Anbar over a decade ago.

This stance fits well with Iran-linked militias’ demands to allow their fighters to retain weapons and checkpoints.

In a 2007 interview with a US publication, Suleiman said that Shiite groups in the southern part of the country had asked for information on how to form “sahwa” groups on their own, and in a 2014 interview with the Kurdish media outlet Rudaw, Suleiman claimed that “armed tribes can easily push out ISIS (IS) but that Maliki must first leave office.”

This did not happen. Though Maliki stepped down as prime minister in August 2014, tribal fighters in Anbar were forced to receive help from both the US-led coalition and from Iran-backed armed groups accused of committing numerous abuses against them.

Thousands of men from Anbar are still missing years later, many presumed dead. And some land is also still held by Iran-linked armed groups “for security reasons.”

Sources in western Anbar among tribal fighters both from the Dulaim tribal confederation and others reacted angrily to the idea that Suleiman might return to holding anything similar to the leadership role among Sunnis in Anbar he once had.

“He’s the cause of the problems we’re still dealing with in Anbar,” one claimed in Erbil. “There is simply no way that will ever happen.”    (al-monitor)

butterfly  Fourteen MPs to boycott the parliament session to protest the "political abuse" of Justice and Accountability law .............. 2022-05-10 10:52

Shafaq News/ Fourteen lawmakers are contemplating a boycott of the parliament sessions in an act of protest against the "political abuse" of the "Justice and Accountability law", MP Mohammad Abed Rabbu said on Tuesday.

"The Fourteen lawmakers might refrain from attending any session unless a proposal on the Justice and Accountability law is enlisted on the parliament's agenda," Abed Rabbu told Shafaq News Agency.

"The implementation of the law shall no longer be in the hands of the Justice and Accountability Commission to hinder its abuse for political purposes," the lawmaker said, "such task shall be exclusive for the Iraqi judiciary."

"The law was used to kick out certain figures from the electoral race even though they did not have a history with the Baath party. The abuse of the law extends to the nomination for high-profile positions and superior grades in the Iraqi state."

"Twenty years have passed since ousting the former regime. Everything is clear now," he concluded.

Dave   Justice and Accountability law.....have not heard about that in a long time..

Sheila   butterfly Have you watched the 2000 Mules documentary?

butterfly   No but reading the comments and they are comical. "Where is the proof" "they show no proof" "all words to distract from what they just posted about NO fraud" on and on and on

butterfly   I don't have OAN on my lineup.

Sheila   butterfly I did watch the documentary. I am not discounting this.

butterfly   sheila I have no clue what it is about so I can't make a comment on it. I just know that even more republicans are coming out and saying there was NO voter fraud, it wasn't rigged, on and on. So my question is, if the 2020 election was "rigged" then every election before that was "rigged" bc everyone in the states have used the same system for decades. People also have forgotten that Ivanka had/bought the voting machines, so she "rigged" the machines against her father? Everyone of the states that he claims were rigged, have been counted many many times, even by people that are not even connected to the politics.
