Personal banking will be completely different by this time next year. As the Quantum Financial System takes over all banking transactions, this will take place quickly, and organically.

This is the end of fiat and the integration of digital money.

Because of strict NDAs we have not heard from the banks acknowledging the USN. This didn't need to happen anyway. We're fine with soft announcements like bank appointments. This is shaping up to be a great week ahead.

Nader From The Mid East   Here's the good news.  From here till next week the rate will go up.  I don't know if they're going to RV it or RI it.  Or I have no idea if they're going to the 'previous' it.  The previous is 1160 but I think they're going to put it at 1150.  I hope they RV it...I know something is going to happen this week or by next week.  I know for sure yes...they keep saying they're going to do, they're going to do it, they're going to do it but we don't know when they're going to do it.

The Purchasing Power Of The Citizen Decreased By 22%

Monday 31 January 2022  214  Baghdad: Haider Falih Al-Rubaie  Specialists in economic affairs identified a number of reasons for the high levels of inflation in the country, and their reaching rates they described as “dangerous”, putting at the forefront of these reasons the increase in the prices of food, health services, transportation and electricity, stressing that the high levels of inflation have eaten up approximately 22% of the purchasing power of the citizen. , and led to an increase in poverty rates, and while they agreed that changing the exchange rate is the main cause of high inflation rates, they stressed the need to launch more initiatives aimed at establishing small and medium enterprises, especially in the industrial, agricultural and investment sectors.

The latest statistic published by the Ministry of Planning showed a rise in annual inflation rates of 8.4%, which represents a “danger bell” for a number of economists, who warned of the dangers of rising inflation rates on the national economy in general.

Economic Risk

Despite the significant negative effects of inflation on the national economy in general, however, the economist, Manar Al-Obaidi, believes that the increase in its rates has a direct impact on the life of the citizen, leads to high rates of poverty, and paralyzes the increase in per capita GDP.

Al-Obaidi pointed out that “measuring the level of price increases for each item or service, is after measuring the level of its impact on the citizen. The importance of the food sector is approximately 28% for the citizen, followed by the housing and rental sector, whose importance is 17%.”

The economic expert pointed out that “inflation rates in Iraq rose in important sectors, including those that are of great importance such as the food sector, as well as important and necessary sectors for people’s lives, such as the health, electricity and water sectors, which witnessed clear increases.

Food Security

Al-Obaidi believes that the food sector plays an important role in the process of rising inflation rates, because of its great relative importance, which necessitates working to achieve food security by adopting agricultural, industrial and agricultural projects and increasing equivalent productions such as canning and storage, stressing that these steps would Contribute to alleviating the rise in prices globally, and provide Iraq with food security away from external influences, and away from the impact of the exchange rate.

The expert pointed out that "the health sector, other goods and services, and electricity supplies are among the sectors with the highest rise in prices, as they witnessed an increase of more than 30%, and these percentages require active intervention from various parties to reduce them."

Investing Money

With the aim of reducing the effects of inflation on the Iraqi economy, Al-Obaidi urged the harm of investing the surplus funds of the state and the reserves of the Central Bank, to launch initiatives that work to establish various projects that can contribute to reducing inflation rates, and to strive seriously to find real productive job opportunities that distance us from the “social welfare” state.

“We are experiencing today, especially with the high unemployment rates that have turned from a problem into a real disaster, rising with more than 500,000 people entering the labor market annually.

Al-Obaidi also stressed the importance of “investment in education,” stressing that human capital is one of the factors affecting the rise in unemployment rates, and therefore real strategies must be worked out to implement education projects that raise the rate of human capital, which will contribute to reducing unemployment rates significantly. .

Exchange Rate

In turn, the economist, Dr. Ali Hadi Al-Nusaifi, attributed the inflation rates to these levels to the change in the exchange rate and the devaluation of the local currency by 22% in parallel with the size of the bill of large foreign imports that are financed in dollars, stressing that this led to the citizen losing a percentage of purchasing power.

His income is much greater than the rate of devaluation of the currency due to the lack of control over the markets and its outrageous rise, indicating that this rise was paid for by the low-income brackets, and then led to the expansion of the poverty gap and the increase in the size of unemployment.

Al-Nusaifi also indicated, among other reasons, that he said that they contributed to the increase in inflation rates to those rates he described as “dangerous,” including “the absence of a production function, exports being limited to oil resources, high costs on commodity requirements, and high taxes.”

Suggestions And Solutions

In order to reduce the effects of inflation and reduce its high rates, the expert Al-Nusaifi suggested a number of points that he called on the government to implement, putting at the forefront of those points, strengthening the ration card program, and working on the “cash allowance” to replace the commodity, provided that the value of the goods in the market is taken into account, as well as Re-working the supported central market program, activating the market monitoring program, and reducing taxes and customs on some productive activities. Funding initiatives for small projects of not less than 10 trillion dinars to reduce unemployment and reduce the poverty gap before it is classified in extreme and dangerous levels.   LINK

The Appearance Of Muhammad Salih On The Budget Delay: The State's Financial Activity Will Continue... But!

Posted On 2022-01-31 By Sotaliraq  Yesterday, Adviser to the Prime Minister for Financial Affairs, Mazhar Muhammad Salih, outlined the economic impact resulting from the delay in approving the general budget.

Saleh said, in a press statement followed by (Al-Mada), that "the effective financial management law is an exceptional and important alternative to managing the country's public finances, in case the approval of the general budget is delayed for any reason, as is the case at the present time, and it is a specific financial policy.

Through it, disbursement mechanisms are exercised in a manner similar to the actual current expenditures that were disbursed successively in the previous year 2021 and according to an exchange rule of 1-12 per month.”

He added, "If this mechanism is available, the financial activity will continue without creating booms that suit the higher and desired levels of growth in the economy in its current situation, especially in the implementation of projects, programs and investment activities, as well as providing new government job opportunities, which means that the current financial activity is an activity The minimum, which represents the last year and does not correspond to the desired activities that the budget aspires to in accordance with the levels of population and sectoral growth desired, to meet its needs, which are definitely the largest, especially the issue of new investments and their impact on reducing unemployment in the labor force and business activity in the private sector and its important impact in promoting the activity of National income if it is achieved.

He pointed out that “there will remain a gap between the required financial planning that fits the annual increase in population and development needs, which is approved by a general budget planned according to the needs and expansions of economic life and the development of its conditions in accordance with the objectives of the annual budget law and for each year, and the absence of a budget that is replaced by the adoption of last year’s standards to meet the needs of economic growth population this year.

He continued, "There is an overlap and divergence between financial needs and desires and the available financial policies that depend on last year's standards for the current year," noting that "the longer the budget law legislation is disrupted, the slower new expenditures that serve the growing economic activity and record a state of quasi downturn in the national economy.

He pointed out that "the general budget expenditures constitute approximately 50% of Iraq's gross domestic product, but in this case and the absence of legislation, the expenditures will remain slow and do not reflect the criteria of a financially prosperous year in oil revenues such as the current year, unless the budget is enacted as soon as possible and in accordance with standards development and stability for 2022. Shafaq News/ Leading figures in the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) cast question marks on the demonstrations protesting the nomination of Hoshyar Zebari for the presidency a few days ahead of the election session.

In a statement to Shafaq News Agency, Showan Mohammad Taha, a KDP leading figure, said, "those demonstrations are not popular. They are organized by political parties. Some of the Demonstrators serve in the presidential guards' brigades. We are aware that they received money to do what they are doing, and we know who paid them as well."

"The Tahrir square is the October martyrs square. Political parties shall keep their political disputes outside this square that played a vital role in changing the political situation."

A group of demonstrators gathered near the heavily fortified Green Zone, downtown the Iraqi capital Baghdad, to express their discontent with Zebari's candidature to the position.

For his part, Bengen Rekani, a representative of the KDP in the Kurdish delegation negotiating for the government formation, said, "more than 200 MPs will vote for Zebari according to the agreements with the KDP allies, the Sadrist movement, and the Sunni leading forces."

"Except for the political aspect, many of the Coordination Framework forces believe that Zebari has the political expertise and tolerance of different political parties to hold the position."

butterfly   Iraqi parliament will hold a vote to determine who will succeed the incumbent President of the Republic, Barham Salih, on February 7th.

Endorsed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Salih will be running for a second term in office.

However, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), who secured 31 seats in the recent parliamentary election-well ahead of the PUK's 18, has put forth the name of Hoshyar Zebari, a member of the KDP's Politburo and Iraq's former Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Talks between the PUK and KDP collapsed with the two leading Kurdish parties engaged in a strained war of words heated with reciprocal recriminations.

A few days after lifting their suspension following an order by Iraq's supreme court, the Parliament Speaker, Mohammad al-Halboosi, and his deputies convened last week to deliberate the procedures related to nominating and electing the next president. https://www.shafaq.com/en/Iraq-News/Zebari-to-win-the-presidential-race-KDP-leading-figures-assert

butterfly   It is worth noting that on February 7, the Iraqi representatives will vote in the Parliament for the next President.

The two main Kurdish parties are neck to neck as the elections approaches.

Earlier, KDP said that the Presidency position is entitlement of the Kurdish component, not a party itself.

While the PUK insists upon naming Barham Salih for a second mandate, its rival (Kurdistan Democratic Party-KDP) does not agree that it has "adequately discharged" the role of President and named Hoshyar Zebari as its candidate for the position.

Per the power-sharing formula between the two leading Kurdish parties, the President of the Republic was usually named by the PUK. However, this might change in light of the parliamentary election results that showed the KDP winning 31 seats, compared to the PUK's 17. https://www.shafaq.com/en/Iraq-News/Iraqi-Parliament-publishes-the-list-of-candidates-for-the-Presidency

butterfly   The Central Bank of Kuwait opens the door to receive applications to establish fully digital banks

An official in the Central Bank of Kuwait announced today, Monday, the opening of the door to receive applications for the establishment of new banks that provide their services completely digitally through a public banking license.

Director of the Office of Supervision Department at the Central Bank of Kuwait, Muhammad Al-Khamis, said that the deadline for receiving applications for establishing digital banks continues until June 30, indicating that the announcement of applications that meet the conditions will be by the end of 2022.

Al-Khamis confirmed, in a video broadcast by the Central Bank of Kuwait on YouTube, that the bank has finished setting up a framework for digital banking “with the aim of stimulating innovation.”

He pointed out that this framework allows the provision of digital banking services according to 3 models of digital banking:

The first is digital services provided by existing banks through a banking unit within the bank.

The second model is “Banking as a Service”, which is a model based on a partnership between an existing bank and a digital institution that forms the front end in terms of customer relationship management and marketing activities, while the responsibilities of operations fall on the bank itself.

The third model is the fully independent digital banking model.   Source: Reuters

butterfly   Pro-Iranian forces protest against Zebari's candidacy for the presidency of Iraq

BAGHDAD - Hundreds of supporters of the coordinating framework forces loyal to Iran demonstrated on Monday in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, to reject the candidacy of the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Hoshyar Zebari, for the position of President of the Republic.

Supporters of the coordination framework (which includes Shiite political forces) went out to demonstrate in "Nour Square" west of Baghdad, rejecting Zebari's candidacy for the post of president.

Witnesses explained that the demonstrators raised banners that read, “We do not want advocates of secession,” and another that read, “Khan al-Amanah does not suit him luxury,” in reference to Zebari’s support for the referendum on the secession of the Kurdistan region from Iraq in 2017.

The forces support the coordination framework that includes coalitions of the rule of law Al-Fateh, Al-Nasr and other Shiite political forces, Barham Salih assumed the position of President of the Republic for a second term.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party, led by Masoud Barzani, announced the candidacy of Zebari for the post of president, while the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan announced last week its nomination of Barham Salih for the post.

The two candidates are the most prominent candidates to win the position, especially since the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has maintained the position of president since 2006, while the share of the Kurdistan Democratic Party during the last period was one of the sovereign ministries, either finance or foreign affairs.

butterfly   Last week, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan criticized the KDP's abandonment of an agreement concluded between the two parties years ago, which stipulated that a candidate from the PUK would assume the presidency, with the Kurdistan Democratic Party taking one of the sovereign ministerial positions in the federal government.

Since 2006, the political custom in Iraq has been for the Kurds to hold the presidency, the Shiites to be the prime minister, and the Sunnis to head the parliament.

During its first session, on January 9, the parliament elected Muhammad al-Halbousi to head the council for a second term after obtaining the confidence of 200 deputies, compared to 14 votes for his rival, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani.

Shiite political forces are holding continuous dialogues for the purpose of agreeing on a personal nomination for the post of prime minister.

Al-Halbousi confirmed that a Kurdish-Sunni-Shiite movement began to form a purely national government, considering that "the time of foreign interventions in forming governments is over."

Al-Halbousi, who leads the "Progress" coalition (37 seats out of 329 in Parliament), wrote a tweet in which he stated that "the time of foreign interventions in the formation of Iraqi governments is over."

butterfly   He added, "Today, the mountains of Iraq (majority Kurdish areas) and deserts (majority Sunni areas) are moving to Najaf al-Ashraf for the talks of a purely national Iraqi government, neither eastern nor western.

The term neither eastern is used to refer to Iran, nor western is used to refer to the United States of America.

And last week, the commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Ismail Qaani, visited Iraq and met with Shiite political leaders, in an effort to bridge the views between the leader of the Sadrist movement and the leaders of the coordination framework.

But the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, renewed, on Monday, his adherence to the formation of a national government in Iraq, welcoming dialogue with opponents of that.

Al-Sadr said in a tweet via “Twitter” after his meeting with Al-Halbousi and the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, in the Najaf Governorate (south). "Stop terrorism and violence against the people and partners, so we are still with the formation of a national majority government."

"We welcome dialogue with the national opposition (Shiite political forces that refuse to form a national majority government)," he added.

Al-Sadr met with Al-Halbousi and Barzani, as part of an initiative by the leader of the "Kurdistan Democratic Party" Massoud Barzani, with the aim of ending the political crisis in the country.

The Sadrist bloc topped the elections that took place on October 10, with 73 seats (out of 329 in Parliament), followed by Progress coalition 37, State of Law coalition 33, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party 31. https://rawabetcenter.com/archives/141723

butterfly   The 91st minute agreement “...handing over nuclear weapons in exchange for removing military enclaves  ---  Upon entering the White House about a year ago, President Joe Biden made renewing the nuclear agreement with Iran a top priority for his administration. His spokesmen made it clear that he needed an agreement that would remove the Iranian issue from the agenda, at least for the time being, so that he and his administration could devote themselves to addressing issues important to Washington, foremost of which is the rivalry with China in the Far East.

The Iranian regime also appears enthusiastic, albeit much less than Biden, as it should be admitted, to reach a renewed and improved nuclear agreement that would lead to the lifting of economic sanctions, and allow for stability and the strengthening of its position at home.

However, despite these starting conditions, during the last year, no breakthrough was achieved on the road, and negotiations dragged on and extended and witnessed crises that were thought to have kept Washington away from Tehran. In fact, it was the Iranians who created one crisis after another, and even halted the talks as if they had no interest or desire to achieve a renewed agreement. As for Washington, for its part, it found itself being drawn into and hesitantly responding to Iran's steps and provocations.

butterfly   At one point, a month or two ago, it was thought that the Americans had given up, and that the possibility of reaching an agreement had been eliminated. Indeed, statements heard in Washington state that all options are open and on the table, a particularly emphatic and implausible hint of the possibility of a military attack.

However, with a magic wand, and in light of the escalating tension between Washington and Beijing, and Moscow as well, which opened a new front in Ukraine against the United States - talks have resumed, and Iranian and American spokesmen are predicting an imminent breakthrough that will lead the two sides to the desired agreement. Even Iran's leader, Ali Khamenei, gave the green light to the agreement when he declared that "talks, and also the agreement, with the enemy do not mean Iran's surrender."

The negotiators seem to deserve a Nobel Prize, but not for peace but for a distinguished play. After all, the Iranians need to come to terms with their need for air to breathe, far more than they are willing to admit. However, they succeed in proving indifference, as if the whole matter did not concern them. As for the Americans, on the other hand, they broadcast hesitation, weakness, and basically enthusiasm for achieving an agreement at all costs.

The Iranians are artists in negotiations, and they work according to the principle that the agreement should be signed in the 91st minute and not a single moment before that, and this is what most likely will happen.

There is no need to be overly excited by the two sides' threats and the atmosphere of the crisis, which they sometimes bother to broadcast. The parameters of the agreement were decided on the day Biden entered the White House, and since then the Iranians have improved them, and they are in a more advanced position than they were a year ago in everything related to their nuclear project.

butterfly   It seems that it is an agreement that will not be possible to prevent or improve its terms, and thus Iran will remain a touch away from a nuclear bomb under the auspices of the agreement. But what can be done is to intensify the fight against it throughout the Middle East, in Syria and Iraq, and now also in Yemen. This is a struggle that is succeeding, especially in Syria, that enjoys regional and international support, and that can be won.   https://rawabetcenter.com/archives/141716

butterfly   Iraq: Disagreements reach representatives of the civil movement... The names of the presidential candidates will be announced today

Political differences began to deepen after the first parliamentary session, which took place on January 9, and led to the election of a new Presidency for Parliament. While the Shiite forces are fighting to resolve the “largest bloc” and choose a prime minister and a new government cabinet, and in light of the Kurds’ controversy over the eligibility of the position of the President of the Republic, a new dispute emerged within the “independent” political forces, most notably the “Extension” movement that emerged from the October protest movement.

The story began after the movement’s leader, Ghassan Al-Shabib, head of “Extension” accused the prominent activist Alaa Al-Rikabi, along with 6 of the bloc’s deputies, of voting in favor of Muhammad Al-Halbousi, in the session to choose the parliament speaker, which prompted Al-Shabib to resign so as not to be part of an alliance “It includes the killers of the Tishreen revolutionaries,” he said.

Al-Shabib said in a press statement: "I end my organizational career with the extension movement (9 parliamentary seats), and I resign from all my positions in it, and I no longer represent it, nor does it represent me."

He added, "It is not an honor or fitting for me as a protester and one of the sons of the great October Revolution to be a leader or a member of a movement whose Secretary-General and six other members voted with him to elect al-Halbousi as Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament." As a result, the head of the “Extension” parliamentary bloc, Muhammad Nouri, responded yesterday to the accusations leveled against them regarding their support for Al-Halbousi, who won the position of Speaker of Parliament, describing it as a “malicious campaign” that wants to undermine the confidence of voters in the movement.

butterfly   He said in a press statement, "We promised the people and our martyrs that we will not waste their blood, and we will remain on the covenant."

In addition, the House of Representatives is scheduled to announce, today, Monday, the names of the candidates for the post of President of the Republic.   https://rawabetcenter.com/archives/141713

China's $50 Trillion Crisis is FAR Worse Than You Think

.Cathie Wood: China's $50 Trillion Crisis Is FAR Worse Than You Think

Casgaines Academy: Jan 31, 2022

China has grown to become an economic powerhouse over the past two decades. Not a single country in the world has experienced the same level of growth as China.

Economists worldwide see China surpassing the US as the world’s most dominant superpower, but what if I told you that the entire growth of China was all a bubble?

That’s what the CEO of Ark Invest, Cathie Wood, thinks, as she likens the growth of China to Japan’s 30 year economic disaster in the early 1990s. Just like Japan’s GDP that was spearheaded by a real estate bubble, China is currently experiencing the largest housing bubble in history.

Cathie Wood: China's $50 Trillion Crisis Is FAR Worse Than You Think

In this video, I’ll cover from top to bottom how the world is about to wake up to China’s destined collapse.

Over the past 20 years, China's economy has grown substantially but a considerable portion of that has come from real estate. Property developers have borrowed money to expand their real estate portfolio to hundreds of cities. We’re talking about modern glass and steel apartments, office buildings, and houses all across cities in China.

Speculators began purchasing houses with the sole purpose of price appreciation. After all, from the perspective of Chinese citizens, housing prices have been increasing year after year for decades. This was in part from the rapid population growth that China experienced, but the speculation grew even further than that.

Because housing prices just kept increasing year after year, the majority of Chinese citizens could no longer afford a standard house or apartment in cities like Beijing and Shanghai. The logical move would be to purchase a property within the vicinity of the cities but far enough so that prices would be cheap. And that’s exactly what many citizens did.

People began flocking toward houses and apartments not in Chinese cities, but rather 10 or 15 miles away. Because of the increasing demand for houses near cities, prices began to increase, leading citizens to expand even further away from the cities.

Property developers believed that this expansion would continue, so they preemptively built houses further and further out. Nowadays, if you drive an hour or two outside of Beijing or Shanghai, you’ll notice something very strange. There are plenty of modern buildings in great condition, but there’s one issue: there’s nobody there.

Those cities are named the ghost cities, because the only reason why they exist is because speculators think prices will increase. This is a testament to China's growing real estate bubble, a significant driver of the country’s economy.

For instance, take a look at China’s most renowned ghost town, Ordos New Town. The city was expected to house one million people, but that number went down to 300,000 and finally to 100,000 in 2016. Only after moving top schools into the city, was Ordos New Town able to fill its empty houses.

These types of empty units are so widespread that the aggregate amount of space can literally house the entire country of Italy. After 20 years of appreciation, the Chinese real estate sector is now worth over $50 trillion, two times more than the US and almost four times more than China’s entire GDP.

Loomis Sayles, an investment management firm, estimated that 70% of China’s entire wealth is in real estate. In China, it’s not atypical to see citizens put aside money for decades just to purchase one property.

Property prices near cities are so high relative to income that even after years of saving, citizens will have no choice but to rely on mortgages to afford shelter. This is exaggerated by the fact that increasing property prices make citizens feel the fear of missing out, ultimately forcing citizens to take out dangerous levels of loans.

Four out of the top 10 of the most unaffordable cities to purchase housing in are all located in China. This type of appreciation is concerning and won’t continue forever. We saw this before America’s 2008 recession, and we’re seeing similar signs in China.

China’s real estate boom is already showing signs of a substantial slowdown. Because the Chinese housing market just keeps accelerating in prices, property developers have done anything to expand their real estate portfolios as fast as possible.

The easiest to do so is to take out large sums of leverage. Just like before any financial crisis, greed took the center stage and developers were soon stuck with too much debt to handle. One of these developers included the epitome of Chinese real estate development, Evergrande.

Evergrande is one of the largest real estate developers in the world. By using corporate bonds issued to international investors, Evergrande grew its real estate portfolio to over 565 million square meters of development land.

The Central Bank clarified that this decision comes as part of the bank’s endeavors towards accelerating the digital transformation process at the level of the Central Bank and the banking and financial sector, and a number of steps were announced that would start a new era of digital banking and financial work .

In the context of supporting and enabling financial technology companies (Fintech) , the Central Bank is currently working on updating the regulatory framework for the work of these companies in the areas of payments, microfinance and the experimental regulatory environment .

This came during a virtual meeting entitled "Empowerment and Empowerment" held by the bank today, Monday, during which it shed light on the Central Bank of Kuwait's digital strategy with the aim of achieving further development in analytical tools and accelerating the digital transformation process .

In a video broadcast by the Central Bank on its website, Muhammad Al-Khamis, Director of the Office Supervision Department at Bank of Kuwait, said:

The Central Bank said that the bank has completed the development of a framework for digital banking “with the aim of stimulating innovation,” noting that this framework allows the provision of digital banking services according to three models of digital banking   link

Harambe:  Zimbabwe Dollar’s Second Death Seen as Only a Matter of Time | Bloomberg

(1/30/22)

When Zimbabwean businessman Nigel Chanakira asked 100 chief executive officers at a seminar in Harare on Jan. 27 if they were willing to use the local currency, only one raised his hand.

That reluctance is a stark demonstration of the government’s failure to win confidence in the Zimbabwe dollar, the reintroduction of which Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has staked the stagnating economy’s recovery on. For the second time in two decades, Zimbabweans are abandoning their local currency.

At restaurants, a simple request for “the rate” sees one’s bill halved if it’s met in hard currency, and supermarkets openly offer discounts for goods purchased in U.S. dollars. The government paid public workers their Christmas bonuses in dollars, and the revenue service collects a third of its income in greenbacks.

“We can’t deny the reality,” Chanakira, the founder and former CEO of now-closed bank Kingdom Financial Holdings Ltd., said in an interview. “When you get the Zimbabwe dollar you spend it quickly. No one wants to save in that currency.”

New Policy

Between 2009 and 2019, Zimbabwe’s economy was dollarized after hyperinflation led the government to print trillion-Zimbabwe dollar notes before abandoning its currency, leaving the country’s name synonymous with economic malfunction. While the subsequent dollarization tamed price growth, it hurt businesses as neighboring countries using their own depreciating currencies undercut Zimbabwean manufacturers.

“Zimbabwe had become uncompetitive by 2013 and was burdened by an expensive workforce,” John Legat, CEO of the country’s oldest brokerage, Imara Asset Management Ltd., said in a note to clients.

In February 2019, the government dropped a peg that kept a precursor of the Zimbabwe dollar at parity with the U.S. dollar. In June, it was rechristened the Zimbabwe dollar and use of foreign currency was briefly outlawed. Today the currency trades at 115 to the greenback, and more than twice that on the black market.

While inflation slowed from a 12-year high of 837% in July 2020, it was at 61% in January, still rapidly eroding the value of the local unit.

Officials including Ncube, a former Oxford University lecturer, and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor John Mangudya, said government policy is to stick with use of the Zimbabwean dollar.

“The country is not re-dollarizing,” Mangudya said in a interview on Jan. 17. “We need to find a home for our currency.”

Ncube and his ministry didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Alois Burutsa, the lone defender of the Zimbabwe dollar at Chanakira’s meeting, said in an interview that “without our own currency, our exports become uncompetitive.” He’s general manager of Buy Zimbabwe, an organization that promotes local goods.

Capitulation

Yet central bank figures show that 44% of transactions in the country are conducted in greenbacks. The American currency is used to pay for everything from fuel to food, passports, medicines and school fees. Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Ltd., the country’s largest mobile phone operator, offers additional airtime and data if purchases are made in U.S. dollars.

With the Zimbabwe dollar untradeable outside the country, companies need foreign currency to pay for imported equipment, consumer goods, and to placate an increasingly dissatisfied workforce.

And it’s not only businesses that are seeking alternatives to the local currency. The government itself is increasingly finding it has to pay in U.S. dollars if it wants to get things done. Already it’s told public workers that they’ll be paid partly in hard currency this year.

According to Imara, the brokerage, 45% of infrastructure contracts are being met in dollars and the government has undertaken to partially compensate depositors for the loss in value of their savings when it dropped the peg to the dollar.

“Dollarization is the ultimate outcome of a failed economic policy,” said Gift Mugano, executive director at Africa Economic Development Strategies, a Harare-based consultancy. The Zimbabwe dollar “will be in the graveyard” by June, he predicted. Imara says it’ll be largely obsolete by the end of the year.

Chanakira was more optimistic: he said the currency could survive for another two years.

Brian Hirschmann: Higher Inflation and Rates Will be Good for Gold

Palisades Gold Radio:  Jan 31, 2022

Tom welcomes Brian Hirschman back to the show. Brian is Managing Partner of Hirschmann Partnership which is occasionally referred to as the "World's Most Bearish Hedge Fund."

Brian expects inflation to persist for longer than most investors expect due to massive government debt. Inevitably, the U.S. government will default which will send miners and gold far higher.

We could expect some benefits from labor and supply chains improving but inflation has many causes. At some point, government debt will matter, and much higher inflation will result.

Investors shouldn't be too concerned about interest rates as the bigger driver of gold will be risks of default and inflation.

Markets are different today due to the enormous size of the global asset bubbles. Gold will move higher when investors realize that inflation will be here to stay.

Crypto remains a much smaller asset class than gold and therefore the impact of crypto is likely not that significant. Many crypto investors are more speculative and most aren't that interested in metals.

Gold is the ultimate low-risk asset whereas cryptocurrencies remain risky speculative assets. Over the long term, the gold price will drive the mining equities much higher and we're starting to see this occurring.

Gold miners should go up much higher than the returns on gold when the bubbles start to burst.

All governments have too much debt and are trying to keep rates low thru regulations. Banks now own four trillion in debt securities issued by the Fed.

Should foreign debt holders realize the risks then they will start selling their treasuries. This could easily trigger a crisis since we can't control other countries with regulations.

Marginally higher interest rates today will likely not have much impact on inflation but could impact default risks.

Brian compares the status of the U.S. with that of the last European debt crisis.

China's real estate bubble is even worse than that of the United States. When it pops we will see severe impacts on global markets.

SPECIAL:  What happened to Neanderthals?

In time immemorial, humans shared planet Earth with Neanderthals, our closest ancient relatives, but in the end Homo sapiens flourished across the globe while our relatives were doomed to extinction. How did it come to this?

Shawn Smith    Friday 28 January 2022 16:08

Perhaps because of their physical strength, our cousins have been misrepresented as rude, but it is possible that they were also a kind people (Getty Images)

The Neanderthals were already threatened with extinction when our early modern human ancestors migrated to Europe about 45,000 years ago. After more than five thousand years, there are no Neanderthals left on the face of the planet. It is true that we will never know whether we are directly responsible for the extinction of our closest ancient relatives, but it is perhaps safe to assume that we are innocent of the fate to which they have fallen.

Since their remains were discovered in the "Neander Valley" near Düsseldorf, Germany in 1856, a rather bad stereotype has stuck with Neanderthals. Our closest relatives, who used to be described as apes but are somewhat more evolved, are now believed to have much more in common with us than previously thought.

Several discoveries have shown that our relatives were very sophisticated and experienced hunters who could make tools and jewels. In fact, the genomes of modern humans and that of Neanderthals look 99.7 percent identical, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise given that we share a common ancestor that lived in Africa only half a million years ago. Evolutionarily speaking, this time period is more like the blink of an eye.

After breaking away from our common ancestor, the line that gave rise to Homo sapiens survived in Africa until relatively recently, while the ancestors of Neanderthals formed part of an early wave of migration into Eurasia. And when the two species were finally reunited in Europe, 45,000 years ago, one can only wonder whether Neanderthals underestimated their new neighbours, those weak monkeys who were taller and thinner and babbled among themselves in incomprehensible language.

Neanderthals were far more powerful than us. Their musculature was so highly developed that the remains of their skeletons sometimes seemed to curve under the weight of the weight. Their face seemed to be drawn more forward due to their protruding nose, believed to be an evolutionary adaptation designed to warm the air they breathe in order to better enable them to live in colder climates.

Their stocky bodies and short arms and legs resemble the structure of modern humans inhabiting the highlands of the Arctic, as both were likely able to adapt to living in these places through the limited surface area of the body and to maintain their temperature in cold environments.

Having inhabited northern latitudes for a period of time five times longer than modern northern Europeans, Neanderthals likely evolved other adaptive traits as well: blue or green eyes, light skin, and blond hair. It is also not excluded that they spent much more time hunting than gathering food;

A chemical analysis of their bones reveals very high levels of carbon and nitrogen isotopes, which are a distinct feature of animals in the highest carnivorous class, and skeletons of animals are usually found huddled near Neanderthal sites.

It is believed that Neanderthals were experienced predators who adopted surprise as a way to hunt their prey, as they were able to cooperate and think strategically to kill a woolly mammoth, for example, while the process of reconstructing their vocal tract shows that they had at least 25 percent of the vocal ability of modern humans, that is, it was more than enough to formulate an effective primitive language.

Neanderthals had thick eyebrows and large nostrils, but the distinctive depression of the backbone is the most obvious defining characteristic. For hundreds of thousands of years, the Neanderthals stretched from North Wales through Eurasia to Siberia, and even as far as modern China.

So where did things go wrong for the Neanderthals?

Given that the cave sites they favored as living quarters are well suited to preserving the bones, each new archaeological discovery provides additional evidence that experts add to the fossil record that so far contains the remains of more than a thousand Neanderthals, giving us a tantalizing glimpse of what might have been. It caused the decline of the Neanderthals.

It is unlikely that the extinction of Neanderthals was a single event, but rather a complex process involving multiple factors that occurs gradually over thousands of years. Various parts of Europe witnessed the extinction of this species at different times and for local reasons that varied in different places.

But even so, climate change is probably the most important factor in the decline of Neanderthals. A sudden drop in temperature on the planet about 50,000 years ago may have disrupted the ecosystem and stressed the groups of medium to large mammals that Neanderthals hunted.

Since then, massive cold waves lasting about a thousand years have coincided with the gradual extinction of our ancient relatives.

It seems that Neanderthal populations dwindled in numbers and retreated to remote and hard-to-reach areas in order to survive. As a living species, Neanderthals are believed to have been over-reliant on a limited carnivorous diet, and their supposed inability to adapt their hunting methods led to their annihilation.

But why were Neanderthals unable to adapt to new environmental challenges, unlike our early modern human ancestors who discovered ways to survive? Although our ancient relatives were able to use and benefit from stones, stone tools discovered at sites hundreds of thousands of years old bear few signs of technical progress, strengthening the theory that they may not have been innovators.

Our ancestors of Homo sapiens in Africa went through the same period of stagnation about 100,000 years ago when they experienced a "cognitive revolution" or a "great intellectual leap forward". This is probably rooted in a sudden advance in their linguistic and conceptual abilities.

Stephen Sheenan, an archaeologist at University College London, has proposed that the pace of cultural innovations greatly accelerated as our early modern ancestors began to live in larger groups that required advanced social and cognitive skills, and this view is supported by research by Robin Dunbar. An anthropologist at the University of Oxford.

Dunbar's research demonstrated that different types of primates had the optimal number of members before hierarchy and relationships began to fall apart, and groups split into competing teams. Dunbar is best known for showing that modern humans can maintain stable relationships with 150 people, which is why it's the perfect size for efficient companies, rural villages, active military units, and personal social networks.

For our early modern ancestors, societies of 150 would have given us tremendous power, but according to Dunbar, our true strength derives from the way our language evolved to track and share useful information about our friends and foes. Gossip theory holds that the development of human language is an evolutionary adaptation of storytelling.

Mystery has helped hold larger groups of people together, but it has also spawned imagination, artistic creativity, and most importantly the ability to discuss things that don't happen right in front of our eyes.

Yuval Noah Harari, in his best-selling Sapiens book, uses Robin Dunbar's "Theory of Nonsense" to suggest that the distinctly human quality of storytelling and abstract thinking has truly allowed us to inherit the Earth.

Our ancestors of Homo sapiens in Africa went through the same period of stasis about 100,000 years ago (Getty Images)

For Harari, fiction and superstition form the essential basis for ideas that can break through Dunbar's 150-person threshold, transforming separated human societies into a complex culture that engages in innovation among tribes, critical trade networks, religions, and ultimately nation-states populated by millions or even billions. the people:

Harari writes, "Nevertheless, none of these things exist outside the stories that people invent and pass on to one another. There are no gods in the universe, no nations, no money, no human rights, no laws, no justice outside the common imagination of human beings."

Also, solid evidence indicates that early modern humans did develop long-distance trading networks that protected them from starvation when sudden and unpredictable food shortages threatened their survival.

By contrast, before the arrival of the first modern humans, Europe appears to have been inhabited by very small, scattered and isolated communities of Neanderthals, which explains the delays in their technical progress.

Also, recent advances in the analysis of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) of Neanderthal remains have yielded very significant results.

Bones found in a Croatian cave in the 1980s belong to a Neanderthal who lived 52,000 years ago, but she was surprisingly genetically similar to another Neanderthal that inhabited Siberia 122,000 years ago.

The fact that two Neanderthal women separated by some 4,000 miles and 70,000 years were closely related also supports the theory that a decline in Neanderthal genetic diversity contributed to their extinction.

In contrast, a recent study led by the University of Denmark found that the genomes of early modern humans were more genetically diverse, supporting the theory that ancient humans lived in very large networked societies that helped them regularly exchange sexual partners, genes, and ideas.

Because of their greater diversity, early modern humans had a greater ability to resist infectious diseases, and were generally more successful as a living species. Apparently, incest was taboo in their culture, while Neanderthal genomes reveal very high rates of interbreeding necessitated by their tendency to live in isolated communities.

Most anthropologists believe that Neanderthals were able to use a fairly sophisticated language, but their cultural isolation suggests that whenever they met other Neanderthals, language barriers prevented the spread of their community networks.

But it's not just our tendency to communicate that privileged our ancestors. During the "cognitive revolution" in Africa, quantitative changes occurred in the brains of our ancestors, making them better equipped to survive in hostile environments.

Neanderthal brains, which evolved independently in Europe, carried less developed parietal lobes and cerebellum, regions involved in tool use, creativity, problem solving, and high-level conceptualization, so it is possible that our ancestors survived the challenges of climate change because they were resourceful innovators..

Knitting may not seem like a revolutionary technique, but associated skills such as spinning enabled us to make nets, traps, and traps that allowed the young and old in early modern human societies to hunt small mammals and fetch a very wide variety of protein-rich foods.

While our ancestors continued to develop more intelligent ways of killing animals from a distance using lancet weapons, and later bows and arrows, it is believed that Neanderthals remained so attached to close range ambushes that it proved to be a dire occupational hazard.

However, later on, evidence began to emerge on Neanderthal sites that they used more advanced technologies just before their extinction. According to a theory put forward by Paul Millars, emeritus professor of prehistory at the University of Cambridge, they began to imitate their new neighbors.

But in terms of innovation, it may have come too late for the Neanderthals. In an analytical study carried out by Millers comparing the population density in Homo sapiens and Neanderthal sites in southern France, the evidence is compelling. After arriving in Europe, which was inhabited by only a few thousand, the professor concluded, modern humans soon outnumbered Neanderthals by ten to one.

According to anthropologist Pat Shipman, because early humans were anatomically taller and thinner with a lower metabolic rate, as hunter-gatherers they were more energy efficient and needed fewer calories to survive in a challenging environment.

Their superiority in the ability to travel long distances was enhanced by the domestication of wolves, which enabled them to track prey more efficiently and protect valuable prey skeletons from other predators, thus outperforming their Neanderthal competitors.

Recent improvements in radiocarbon dating technology with 95 percent confidence indicate that about 45,000 years ago, modern humans and Neanderthals entered into intertwined relationships in Europe for a period of 2,600 to 5,400 years.

The disappearance of Neanderthals soon after our ancestors arrived in Europe may suggest that we accelerated their extinction. Their demise is one of history's most pressing mysteries, and some believe we are directly involved.

It is certain that two very similar predatory species cannot coexist in the same place indefinitely, as they are likely to compete for living space, cave sites and fishing resources. However, since the population is very small, and one primitive human being lived in every 100 square kilometers according to estimates, chances of coexistence, constant competition, or even chance encounters must have been rare.

But it is known that a few short meetings, to say the least, have brought them together. Until recently, Neanderthals and early modern humans were thought to have lived as completely separate species from one another, but in 2014 evolutionary geneticists shocked the scientific community by declaring that Neanderthals were not completely extinct in the end.

An analysis of the modern human genome has revealed that almost all living things today that originate outside of sub-Saharan Africa carry some Neanderthal DNA in their genes, because interbreeding undoubtedly occurred whenever early humans and Neanderthals encountered throughout their intertwined history. So we find quite a bit of Neanderthal in many of us around the world.

New archaeological discoveries continue to provide tantalizing glimpses into the evolving Neanderthal culture.

When it comes to language and intellectual development, symbolic representation is of great importance, so it may be clear that recent research by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology has used uranium and thorium dating to show that Neanderthals were practicing cave art at three separate sites in Spain before 20,000 A year after modern humans first arrived in Europe.

If Neanderthals did indeed engage in symbolic thinking, it is possible that they might have been almost epistemologically indistinguishable from their recent modern human neighbours.

They probably only preceded us by 30,000 years, and died before they had a chance to complete the great cognitive leap that our African ancestors took 100,000 years ago.

Perhaps because of their physical strength, our muscular and burly cousins were misrepresented as primitive savages, but it is possible that they were also a kind people.

Neanderthal remains reveal horrific hunting injuries they suffered and then recovered long before their deaths, suggesting that they tended to their wounded long after they were unable to contribute to the group's survival.

Just like early modern humans, these people likely buried their dead in order to preserve their bodies for the afterlife. Certainly, burial sites established by later Neanderthals contained funerary goods.

One site in Iraq also revealed high levels of pollen, indicating that flowers were placed in their graves.
